As the titel suggests I need some help how to make a part of an image transparent. Preferably without the use of photoshop since I don't have much room left on my HDD.
What do you say?
You could just post the image and get someone else to do it for you.
I could. I would really like to know how to do it but if anyone would be nice enough i'ts my current avatar (which looks like a stylized "A" if I would change later on). I want to remove the white portions of the pic. Others might not notice the contrast to the background but it bugs me.

I'm pretty sure paint.net can do it, although I have PS so I have no idea how large paint.net is. I'm certain to some degree that it would be exactly the same instructions though, to get it loaded in then use magic wand/whatever selection tool, and just hit delete (that's how photoshop would do it). I'd be glad to do it for you in like 5 minutes if you specify the file type.

It's what one of my friends uses to make minmap sprays (with vtfedit too of course), good luck.

GIMP or Paint.net will support transparency. Make sure you save as PNG because it supports transparency, and will not quality-rape your image like JPG.
NOTE however, if you want to upload a transparent PNG as your avatar... You MUST! resize it to 80x80 or less first, otherwise when Facepunch resizes it all transparency will be lost.
