The "Quick Questions That Don't Deserve A Thread"...Thread. v5
5,001 replies, posted
The purpose of this thread is simple. It's for those that have quick questions regarding on anything computer or perhaps electronics related, where a thread is not necessarily required.
The reason of why such thread is created is to help reducing forums from being cluttered with threads on minor questions which tends to be ignored, as well as keeping other threads on topic.
If you have any quick questions, such as "Can my computer run this game", or "How do I turn off automatic defragmentation", feel free to ask them here. If you have any questions that may require more opinions, diagnosing issues or is more complex opposing to a fast question along the lines of "What are some pros and cons over buying a GTX660 ti over the Radeon HD 7870", or "My computer BSODs when I plug in and would not restart. Please help me diagnose my issue", it may be wiser to create a thread in an appropriate section instead. You may ask them in this thread too, but the resulting amount of attention you will receive on your question may be insufficient.
Please be descriptive about your question when possible, rather than saying "my computer does not work, how should I fix it?"
For your convenience, the last page of v4 is here
I was in the middle of typing a response when the thread got locked so I'll post it here.

How do I change the user interface language in Office 2013 to English?
I've looked in the settings and the language settings program, nowhere does it says I can change it to English.
It's set to "Same language as in Microsoft Windows" which is English, but the Office programs are in English. The other one is Danish.
When trying too Google it I just find people who want to change the correcting language. (It's set to English as primary for me.)
Edited:
I don't like having my UI in Danish, but that isn't the biggest problem. The biggest problem is that the shortcuts are in Danish too.
Bold text is ctrl+F, and Italic is ctrl+I
If you click the link at the bottom of the display language settings, you'll get your answer.
If you have Office 365, you'll need to reinstall it and pick the appropriate language download.
If you have retail, you will need to buy the English language pack for $25 (I believe its 20 Euro equiv.).
Imagine that. Language pack DLC for Microsoft Office. Why am I not surprised?

I'm looking for a decent 1155 mobo to replace my ASRock Z77 Pro3 (which as it turns out isn't as suited as I'd initially thought for overclocking) but these two in particular have caught my eye; the Asus P8Z77-V LX and ASRock Extreme 4. There's obviously a marked price difference between the two but given that it's rather difficult to get a hold of 1155 mobos and I want to try and get the most out of my 3570k for the next couple years I figured it'd be best to ask here. Plus a friend said he was surprised at the Extreme4's price.
I'm thinking of replacing my 2 AMD 6970s with a Single GTX 970, is it worth it?

Is it better to leave a laptop on a table and let the laptop feet do the elevation or should I put a book near the battery area to elevate the entire laptop at an angle a bit to seemingly allow more airflow on the underside of the laptop or does it not matter? Just wondering.

Depends on where the intake is and how the cooling is designed. However I can tell you that elevating it isn't going to hurt.
Not really sure if this is thread worthy so I'll post it here. I was just given a desktop because the main graphic driver in my laptop fizzled out and I was going to go desktop shopping soon. The problem is, this desktop is an emachine EL1300G which is from 2008-2009, and I've got no real idea if I should spruce this computer up or maybe try to scrap it for some money for a less dated desktop.
Right now it's got windows vista, and an Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 card in it. I was planning on looking for a decent card to just stick into it, but now I'm unsure.

Very much so. Depending on how much cash you have (I understand that hardware prices in Canada are wicked inflated compared to the US), you'd be better off grabbing an EVGA GTX 970 FTW edition because of its higher base/boost clocks and EVGA's improvements with cooling on the ACX 2.0. If not, MSI's Twin Frozr V edition of the 970 will still do a phenomenal job.
I just switched my ISP to Rogers. The Internet seems to work absolutely fine, and I get a stable connection in games. That is until my little brother turns on his computer, then it goes all over the map with random ping spikes and even more often just making loading a single website impossible for the both of us. The thing is, it's not him and it's not me. If I disconnect from the Internet then his goes fine. It's not due to any programs either of us run, it occurs literally as soon as they both are connected to the wifi. It makes the Internet unusable for all of the people in my house on any device, but it has something to do with just these two machines because if one of the computers is off it, all other connected devices like my iPad can work again even with the one of the computers still connected. It's very confusing and I really hope someone might be able to give some insight on this for me
It's just a modem but I understand it's possible to use a router to get to the modem or something like that? And could I get some explanation on why that problem would occur from a poor modem just to help me understand how it works a little better?
So I seem to have a bit of an issue here. I have three monitors. Two are at my desk, which use a DisplayPort and VGA connector, and one is about 30ft away, connected via an HDMI cable. I want the HDMI monitor to duplicate the image of the DisplayPort monitor, but every time I attempt to even enable the HDMI monitor, I am greeted by:
"The display settings could not be saved. Please try a different combination of display settings."
Connecting either the Display port monitor (using an adapter) to the HDMI port or Display port works just fine, and connecting the HDMI monitor to either the HDMI port (again using an adapter) or the Display port works fine as well. The two monitors work correctly, but only when just one of them is plugged in. When both are plugged in, one becomes disabled. The VGA monitor is unaffected.
I'm running an AMD ASUS HD7850-DC2T-2GD5-V2 GPU, and am on Windows 8.1. I've heard something about requiring active adapters or something, but I'm still unsure as to what the issue is. I'd appreciate any help you guys can offer. Thanks.
Edit: Disabling the VGA monitor allows the enabling of the HDMI monitor. This is odd, as my GPU supposedly supports upto six displays.
Okay so I'm helping a friend build his desktop. He has the ASUS 970 graphics card with an 8 slot power outlet to connect to it. The power supply (Corsair CX600M) doesn't connect to it. Any ideas? I can provide pictures.
There is a cable that goes from 8 pin and splits into two 6's and two 2's. I can connect one 6 and one 2 and the other 8 pin to the CPU part of the power supply and the fan spins for a second before it stops spinning completely.
Wait, you should just need the part that goes from the PSU to the 6's and 2's for your GPU. The straight 8 pin just goes to the CPU power and nothing else.
But if I do use that cable, there's one 6 and one 2 dangling and only 1 LED out of 2 (on the graphics card, there are two small white LED's right next to the 8 pin power input) turn on. The graphics card fan's spin right when I turn on the computer, but just for a second before they stop spinning completely.

Okay, getting pictures.

For the 970, do the fans need to be spinning all the time? Cause right now we haven't put the OS on it yet so.
I looked it up too and didn't find anything. But alright, thanks for the help.
Alright. Also just one more thing, I can't see the temperature for it. I tried Speccy and GPU-Z and it won't show the temperature. This is before Geforce Experience and without drivers so hopefully that fixes it.
Shot in the dark, but does anyone know how the Best Buy model of the GTX 970 holds up compared to the other manufacturers (clock speed, how well the fans work, heat, performance, all that)? I know, shopping at Best Buy for PC parts is laughable at best, but I can get it for ~310$ with my employee discount and I'm kinda tempted to do it at that price.

If nobody here knows, then according to this page you can get a full refund up to 15 days afterward (receipt needed).
You should probably report back if you wind up getting it, good or not.

Oh, I know, I work customer service there (probably could get the return policy kicked up a month or so if I tried), but I'm also a tad strapped for cash right now and kinda just looking for something to get with my tax return, so just pricing cards and all right now. I've heard that the 760's we sell there have one of the lowest clock speeds, and I'm just wondering if it's the same for the 970's, or if anyone knows of any other issues those cards may have.
Considering the card and how much of a price drop I can get, that probably is the best price to performance I'll be able to find, especially when I apply a few certificates and gift cards I have lying around, but I don't really want to put down that much money just to find out that particular make of card is garbage a few months down the line.
Generally the ones at Best Buy are literally reference. As from nvidia. They're going to probably have the lowest clockspeed, and no crazy fan setup.

Went with some suggestions I got.
Currently own a Moto G and I have a weird issue. I turn on WiFi and it'll find the signal, but won't get internet access and will make mobile data cease working. I turn off WiFi and mobile data is fine again. I need to find out what's actually wrong because I've tried a lot and nothing seems to be working. I have never seen it turn off mobile data when connected to WiFi before and this is when connecting to a certain network.
I think I need an upgrade. I think the GPU is the biggest slowdown on my machine.
This is my current setup:
XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 "Dual Fan" PCI-Express 2.1, 2xDVI, HDMI, 2xmini-DisplayPort,
Corsair TX750M 750W PSU ATX 12V V2.31, 80 Plus Bronze, Modular, 4x 6+2-pin
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SE OEM, 64bit, SP1
Intel Core i5 2500K 3,3GHz Quad Core, Z68 chipset, 8GB DDR3 1600MHz
256 GB Samsung EVO SSD
Any recommendation? I've been thinking about either Sapphire Radeon TRI-X R9 290 4GB (384.279099 U.S. dollars
) or MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4GB PhysX (482.36389 U.S. dollars)
I live in Sweden and I prefer to buy from Komplett.se
Is there any bottleneck for my computer? Should I wait a couple of months? Should I upgrade something else?
Thanks
Any GPU upgrade will be fine. Your i5 is still relevant. Honestly if you're willing to wait the 960 is just around the corner.
But if you don't want to wait this is pretty much the best value 970 on Komplett.se
https://www.komplett.se/evga-geforce-gtx-970-4gb-physx-cuda/826145
Thanks a lot! I'm completely out of touch with hardware.. Is the GPU my biggest bottleneck at the moment? Will the performance increase be big enough to notice?
I'm buying myself a 970 but I have no idea what the difference between all the different models is, which one is best value?
Post the rest of your specs.
But as of now if you look above but you use this link since you're a beloved brit (http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-04gp42974kr) you're getting the best damn value GPU that EVGA has ever put out. Also does 4K gaming well if you're into that.
Please excuse the terrible monitors, they are next on my list.
All these people with i5s, I'm starting to think that i didn't need to buy that i7 3 years ago.
Is a i7 2600k still good?
Starting to think we should stick an addendum on the title.
"If you're looking to buy a GTX 970, the answer is yes."

The main difference between desktop i5s and i7s is that i7s are capable of hyperthreading, which simulates having twice the number of physical cores (a four-core thread with hyperthreading enabled will have eight threads). For gaming, hyperthreading isn't necessary except in an extremely small and rare handful of cases (although with the advent of DirectX 12 and its optimizations for multithreaded software, this may change in the future). Hyperthreading really shines when it comes to using video editing software or rendering 3D models.
That being said, a 2600K is almost just as viable and relevant as a 4790K at this point in time because upgrading your CPU isn't that important compared to upgrading something like a graphics card. Those old Sandy Bridge CPUs are known for running a bit cooler than current day processors too, so that's also a nice bonus.
The title has been corrected, all is well.
