Ubuntu 10.4 extremely sluggish. New user plz help :(

I suddenly really wanted to try linux, so 2 days ago I installed ubuntu 10.4. I went with it cuz I've heard it's beginner friendly? which I don't really get. I was going to try debian but didn't look into it. ANYWAY, it's running sluggish as HELL. I mean to the point where firefox takes a couple seconds just to open a new window and simple web-pages like craigslist and hotmail take at least 4 seconds to load. it can't even play youtube videos above 2 fps, and has whopping drops to 0 for a few seconds. System monitor shows nothing eating up the cpu. I installed sysinfo and it recognizes all my hardware so I take it the right drivers are installed?
system specs -
Motherboard from a dimension 2400
intel celeron 2.7ghz
1gb ddr 266
intel integrated 845g graphics card
what video drivers are you using?
I'm on windows I'll reboot right now

jk i can't find where to download it :(
The same thing happened to me. Mouse moved slow, words appeared about 5 seconds after I typed it.
I just reinstalled Ubunutu and it was fine.
Don't you mean 10.04.....

He does. Just a simple typo.
Try to go to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers. Then select select a graphics acceleration driver if available.

this is the nitpickiest comment I've ever seen.
you guys are missing the bit where he said 'intel integrated 845g graphics card'
Intel cards all have open source drivers. (With the notable exception of the GMA 500, but that's basically a re-branded PowerVR core)
