So, long story short, I know a few guys that are thinking of starting up a band to do a few bar/pub gigs for a bit of fun. They have a bassist, drummer, lead guitar, etc, but no singer. They asked me (among many others) if I wanted the position, and I told them that I have never sung before.
And its true - I have never sung in the 18 or so years I have been on this planet. Never, ever, not once.
How can I find out if I am really good/mediocre/bad/so awful I should be shot in the throat without someone listening? Well, aslong as I dont know them, its OK. I would probably be OK recording for the internet. I essentially want to try out singing in the comfort of my own home, of sorts, but need some sort of method to find out if I am good or not. Also, tips on how to sing, how to find out what genre my voice fits into and stuff like that. I have no idea if I am even saying that right, I have honestly never thought about this until a few hours ago.
So, I guess any sort of help/nudges in the correct direction would be cool.
Why would they want you to be the singer in a band if they can't know how good you are?
Just try it. Audition in front of them and they'll tell you if you're good enough. If you've ever watched American Idol or whatever you'll know that people generally can't tell if they're any good, especially if they suck.
Just start singing along to your favourite songs. I sing in the car (:v:), and it helped me find the range/limit of my voice.
They are basically just asking everyone they know, and lets be honest, it would be pretty cool to be in a band.
I guess I will just do that. I am extremely nervous about it, though, which is why I wanted tips n shit. Would be nice going into it to have a basic idea of what to do.
I've done classical training for vocals, essentially it all boils down to volume, keep your chest expanded, keep a straight back, and breath from the pit of your stomach. You should feel like you're pushing directly upward on the air from your stomach. One you get that down start to direct your voice, picture the notes flowing up behind your nose and out your forehead, or right out behind your teeth, or right out the back of your head. For each person it' a little different how it changes your notes or emotion or emphasis but yeah. Other than that, you need to understand the emotion or mood of the song, and emulate it and then project it right out to the audience to make them feel what the song feels. Good luck!
On a basic level, at least be confident. Singing louder and with more confidence allows you to hit higher sounds, and also makes the quality of your voice a lot better. Obviously try not to go overboard.
