• Should I join air cadets?

My friend really likes planes, so he is joining the " air cadets ", he says he doesn't want to do it alone, so he asked me to do it. I really don't know whether I should do it or not! I can imagine that flying planes and helicopters would be amazing, but they make you wear dress up and play trumpets, and I really do not see any reason why I would want to do that. I am also scared shitless about parachuting! I would really love some opinions.
Do it.
It's up to you what you choose, not us.
What country are you in? My brother was in the Cadets in the UK and he got to use rifle ranges and gliders. (Obviously closely supervised in both cases after extensive training) It's also a great way to make friends, from what I've heard.
If its canadian, i'd say go for it its a good experience although it's not for everybody, i was in for 4 years
go for it
I used to go there. I can tell you now, the flying is really fun. The first time I went flying, I got about 15 minutes free flying. The second time, not as long, but they were different planes. The guys at the shooting ranges are pretty strict, and I didn't really enjoy shooting tbh, also they don't like hair that's slightly long there. Generally, you can usually get away with not doing any public appearances such as marching and stuff, but they might not be happy about it. The most they can do is tell you how much they wish you were there. In the place I went, there was some really cool stuff we did, for instance, arresting suspects in a van, with replica weapons and all that stuff. Also, doing some night time stuff in camo, like learning how to sneak past the public without them noticing you. Overall, I got bored with it in the end and stopped going. The most annoying part is practising marching and stuff most of the time you go, but sometimes you get days where you can do what you want. It's good for experience, but it depends if you're determined to go to somewhere for like two days a week every week. Keep in mind, it's not a youth club, so don't feel disappointed when you have to do some written work. Ironically, I was also the oldest (time wise) member to not have achieved first class (the first rank you get). But that's probably because I'm a boon. Also, there were ALOT of barbecues at the place I went. Tasty shit. Oops, I just remembered I forgot to give back the uniform after I left...
If your English I can tell you a lot about them, I was one of them, almost got made up to Corporal but dropped out, its fun while it lasts, the weapons training (dismantling, rebuilding, cleaning) is one of the funnest things I did and then firing a rifle was just thrilling I loved it, but after that, it dips, you just stand around do drill forever - then you get the piss taking out of you by passers by. If you want to know more just ask, spent a good year doing it. I also joined because I love planes and flying, I made me want to take up Aerospace Engineering at College.
A guy I know who went to Army cadets said it was shit because people had ego trips when they were at higher ranks, as well as being at an inconvenient time and apparently the majority of the time was spent doing drills and marches.
[del]Gah, I wish one of my friends would do Air Cadets with me. I read about it last year and it looks good but there's no way I'm going alone.[/del] [editline].[/editline] Woops, not Air Cadets, that's British. I'm in the U.S. and I meant the Civil Air Patrol. I'm a Corporal at 440 1st Manx Sqn. Done many camps, loadsa fun. Don't get all the hate on Drill. Maybe we're just good at it.
If you don't know if you want to do it, I would say don't do it, joining anything in the military is a big commitment.
I've been in a 100+ Cadet Squadron for a while now, For almost a year and a half. When i went never went flying once and the place was favoured towards the female cadets by far. Unfortunately boys of that age tend to be like that but what can you do. I think it depends a lot on the squadren you go to. For example you need to sit a test to move up to first class or whatever its called and you do get classes. Thing was mine was totally un organised so every so often they would get half way through then restart the teaching. Big time pointless but as i said you could get a lot out of it so just go try it.
Do it if you really want to, its your life
[QUOTE=Hick2;27468395]Air cadets is a youth organisation that is aligned with the RAF, We are not military, We Promise[/QUOTE] That's it, sorry just a brain fart, I was thinking of the air force.
I had a friend who was in cadets. He was stuck with a mentally handicapped child in his platoon. The kid ended up pissing everywhere in the sleeping quarters and started to scream profusely at anything with a sharp edge. You might laugh now, but when you have to sleep with a kid yelling "AAAHHHHHHHH" and piss-staining everything on campus, you might want to reconsider.
