I've been dealing with a problem with irc clients recently. I haven't been able to connect to a single server. I've been using mIRC for the most part, and I've tried to connect to a gamesurge server, but I get the "[10053] Software caused connection abort" error. It doesn't only happen to one server, it happens to EVERY server. I've tried everything I can to fix this, but I've come up with nothing.
I've tried switching clients, xchat and hexchat, but I get "Connection reset by peer" errors on both.
I'm currently connected through ethernet to my university's internet, so it's not a problem with router.
I'm just stumped right now.
I've also tried webclients, mibbit and kiwiirc, but both websites just get unresolved.
The school probably has some protection proxy set up that is blocking it.
Yea, that's what I assumed and what I was afraid of. Apparently mIRC is a form of piracy software. Fucking hell. And, I need irc for a community I'm in. :(

Hmm, well you could always try using TOR. I dunno if its blocked by your schools crap yet. It used to work at the high school i went to until they got smart enough to block whatever requests it was sending out to set itself up.
If you dont know what that is, its a browser/proxy bundle that allows you to get around the protective stuff and it also gives you some form of anonymity while browsing.
I guess that's a temporary solution to the problem for now. Thanks.
Only problem with that solution is that I can only use web clients and standalone clients. But, it's at least something.

That is a browser, so you can use webclients
Whoops, I meant I can only use webclients but not standalone
Either way, there are ways to run everything through tor, so it will just take a little know how to do whatever you need.
Some IRC networks block Tor, or at least make you jump through hoops to be able to connect through it.
Plus, it's pretty slow.
If you're okay with paying a little and don't need the higher degree of anonymity Tor provides, you should check out a VPN provider. Costs like $10/month and gets you uncensored internet access, as well as protecting you from being spied on if you ever use public WiFi hotspots.
Try before you buy though, your university might block VPNs too.
