I honestly fail to see the apparent importance of animations that have absolutely no effect on combat.

They're not actually important to gameplay, but it makes the multiplayer experience feel even more unpolished.
They actually make the game go faster, so...
I think it's awesome to see that more games are starting to use the Steam Workshop.

Muzzle flashes, brass ejecting, reload animations, legs moving when people run. No effect on combat, but they sure liven the fucking game up. Civ5 is no different, and they're there in Singleplayer. I'm glad they're finally coming to multiplayer. Took them long enough
It's not like you play civ for the action...
I don't see what the fuss is with the animations.
I play Singleplayer with the animations off, it makes combat faster and less time-consuming.

And both Natural Selection 2 and Torchlight 2 will use Steam Workshop

You could always do this, all it does now is instead of a black screen, you get a kinda bad loading screen. The intro video is annoying but it was used for loading the game.
