I had a thread earlier about freezing caused by my webcam. I installed new drivers for the webcam and i still found my computer freezing.
I now notice the freezing also happens when i do other things, like play TF2. This leads me to beleive that the problem isn't linked to my webcam... But the question is, what is causing it?
I'll be playing a game of TF2 or something and all of a sudden the screen freezes. The sound will turn into a buzz and i have no control over input (i cannot press ctrl+alt+delete or move the mouse). The only fix for this is to restart my computer. The performance information doesn't show any strange errors whenever this happens so i don't know what the fuck is going on! Is there a way i can check for issues in my hard drive or something? Do i have a program that has a memory leak? What typically causes a computer to lock up like this?
My computer never did this before, but it did have a harddrive failure back in march so i reformatted and reinstalled everything. I hope this isn't the case this time.
This is usually signs of a failing harddrive, use chkdsk to check them.
does chkdsk also fix the issues?
Only if it can, most of the time the freezing is caused by hard drive death. That can't be fixed with software and you should worry about getting a new one if chkdsk reports too many errors.
Hard drive or overheating.
Definitely not overheating. I checked the warmth of the laptop last time it froze and it definitely was not hot.
I ran chkdsk in read only:

When i try to run it with /f it says i need to restart in order to have it work. So i restart and chkdsk doesn't run. :tinfoil:
Try getting a copy of Spinrite and running it on the drive. If Spinrite doesn't find anything, then the drive is most definitely fine.
FYI SpinRite is a scam program that is totally worthless, it does nothing to fix modern drives.
