I wish I could get in, I'm genuinely interested in their view of how a MOBA should be.
It's fun, but it's really shallow. With no items and very limited other gameplay customization, it feels pretty stale.
I found this to be one of the better dotalike games to have been made so far. It really does its own thing, and it does it well. Unlike sticking to 1 or 2 maps, it has about 5 atm with more still coming. All objective based with a huge emphasis on teamwork(much more than Dota/LoL, especially right at the start)
While things like no items and shared XP sound like major turn offs, they were for me at first, I actually found to love it. First off, HoTs IS CASUAL, Blizzard is doing this on purpose but its working.
Honestly the way I look at HoTs is that its Blizzards version of what a Super Smash brothers done by them would be. Instead of a fighter its sticking to their roots with RTS controls and similar to an RTS. Its not trying to be an e-sport, blizzard has said this.
The heroes themselves feel very unique and defined and are doing some pretty wacky and very original things that even Dota doesnt have. It has heroes specifically for creating more units and pushing lanes. It has a hero that can sit in base, never move, and still do his entire job. I find a fair chunk of the Specialist heroes to really change the entire flow of a match more so than most Dota 2 heroes(but Dota 2 heroes I find make a bigger impact in team fights)
Unlike LoL, they dont really feel weak even though they dont have as many game changing ability's like Dota(things like a well placed black hole being able to single handly change an entire match dramatically) But they still feel very powerful. This is compared to LoL which I played a bunch of back in the day.
Heroes control great, very responsive, great animations, great effects, and fucking ragdoll physics as good as Diablo 3 physics which is nothing more than fluff but its really fucking satisfying being someone like Nova, landing a powerful sniper shot, and watching the enemy fly across the screen from the impact.
Without items and shared XP it is MUCH simpler and sadly does take away from the incredible customization something like Dota 2 has. But what this also does is make the games much more skill based the entire match, in the sense it really comes down more to how you handle teamfights and objectives while ignoring the more heavy meta and laning phases of Dota 2. It sounds strange praising what could be conisdered a major downgrade from the genre, but it works so well in HoTs, its hard to get into that steamrolling shit that happens quite easily with Dota/LoL. If you do get steamrolling in HoTs(it is much harder, generally 4+ levels ahead of the enemy is steamrolling but its much harder said than done) then holy fuck dont worry, you still steamroll hard.
BUT, the best part is the objectives. Each map is different with all different mechanics and its probably the best thing HoTs does compared to any other game in its genre.
Worst thing is its progression, its a lot less tedious now where as 1 game will unlock your heroes 2nd ultimate talent, and the 3rd-5th games with said hero will have ALL their talents unlocked. Talents are essentially special passives or skills every few levels you choose from. This is their replacement for items imo and it works well. I find myself changing talents on the same hero depending on the game at hand and heroes in the game.
Gold rates are complete ass, worst part of HoTs but I am just assuming its so ass now so progression wasnt so fucking easy in Alpha.
Give it a try if you like Dota, remember its more casual but treat it that way. Its a game you can play without anxiety or being serious, where as with Dota you do have to be a lot more serious. Im serious when it feels like what a Blizzards Super Smash Brothers would be.
