I remember grinding for a few weeks in this game for some perma gear. It's not that bad really.

No game should make you have to grind for weeks for basic gear.

Is this CryEngine 3?
It's better than most free to play shooters that I've seen but in general it's still pretty "meh"
The gameplay has that choppy, free to play feel but it's at least fairly balanced and looks alright.
Played the beta ages ago, it was an improvement over the first game but nothing special.
Nothing innovative, but the gameplay is solid, the weapon customization is kind of neat.

steam started allowing f2p games a while ago
devs just started making more of them

Nope, its more along the lines of cod, or atleast some of the gunplay. The game is more team orientated, and real money items are only camos for guns, or some of the pre-mades
This is a really good game.
It does take a bit to get perma weapons but you can also buy temp weapons and gear for quite a lot less.
And I found it really easy because most players don't grasp the concept of using the wallhacks ingame with maximum efficiency.
And not too pay2win because anything game changing can be bought with fake money (some cosmetics require real money and some premades that can be made yourself AFAIK).
So try it.
The gameplay is a bit like call of duty though with the exception of the wallhack system ingame.

So basically this is a game that you play if you're bored, and it's not really bad but not good either. Unfortunately, I keep getting a 'not subscribed' error every time I try to download it.
Played it for a bit, pretty fun actually.
Those getting the "No Subscription" error, usually restarting steam fixes it, or at least that's what fixed it for me.
How do I even get permanent weapons? It doesn't let me increase the time to unlock for.

Less, you can get perma weapons in way, way less time than Tribes.

I think it has been out for awhile but just now added to steam.

No, that's right, it's been around for quite some time, just recently got added on steam. Memory serving awhile back somebody ported and ragdolled the player models.
Its pretty fun, suprisingly.
But am I the ONLY ONE WHO CAN'T STAND THE UI?!
