Well, this has become quite a problem (More so recently, long and dramatic story) where my brother has noticed that his ping in tf2 flys up whenever I go on facepunch.
Now obviously, my dad and myself shrugged it off as nigh on impossible considering that it's just some html and a few 100kb jpegs, and the router (Or is it the modem that does this?) is currently pumping out 7 mbps.
At the moment, my brother, myself and our little brother on the xbox downstairs (Oh joy) are all connected simultaniously. the xbox however uses cable, whilst our two computers use wireless adaptors. (To the router that is also downstairs)
My brother spends most of his time on youtube and sometimes lurks facepunch also, yet I get comparatively little lag when I decide to play online. (I also don't complain as often, but anyway)
I'm not sure if the xbox is somehow getting priority (We haven't had this problem previously, and on reflection that seems like quite an obvious lead) or if my brother is getting the scraps of bandwidth remaining after the xbox (Even if it's not playing online, I'm not certain) and my apparent monstrous habit of loading webpages eats away at it like a pack of ravenous zombies.
It would be great to get to the bottom of this, as my brother sounds like he's dying a slow agonizing death with every brutal (Yet somewhat entertaining) page of LMAO pics I load with disregard for human life.
And on a somewhat unrelated note, and due to my dislike of creating new threads and therefore my desire to maximize the usefullness of ones I DO make; Is it bad that my PSU overheats in games if I have a book on top of my case?
And is there a way to test the actual specs of my monitor? The specs shown on shop pages must be in some way biased, and Im not sure that my old 17Inch monitor has a better colour range than a £200 IPS.
Try using this : http://www.seriousbit.com/netbalancer/ and split your total connection 2-ways (7mbps / 8 = 0.875MB/s (est. 875KB/s) So if you split that twice that's 437KB/s. You should set that as a limit on both PC's, that way you and your brother are basically splitting your connection (disregard the xbox being online, as while gaming this is going to be using only small amounts of bandwith, very unlikely you'll notice it).
Also how far apart are your PC's? If you're both at opposite ends of the router then the signal is going to struggle to service both of you at the same time, when one PC requests vast amounts of data at one time (LMAO thread for example) then the router will focus more on transferring data to that PC, while the one with minimal data usage (gaming) will suffer.
Is it bad that my PSU overheats in games if I have a book on top of my case?
Unless the book is covering a vent of sorts, then there shouldn't be any big change in temperature.
And is there a way to test the actual specs of my monitor?
Colour ranges should be disregarded when purchasing a monitor, as there is no standard to what they should be, hence a manufacturer can slap any crazy amount of digits on to make it look better than what it is.
The problem isn't your download bandwidth, it's your upload bandwidth, which is usually much lower. Gaming sucks up a considerable amount of upload bandwidth (sending movement data to servers, etc.) and the upload speed on an internet connection is usually barely enough for two players to play online.
Use www.speedtest.net to see what your upload bandwidth is.
Qos/port forward the xbawx IP, PING is vector distant, so using Qos and port forwarding can help

uTorrent or the like will destroy ping

Unless he is doing PoE it won't matter or >100 meters cable lenght

Make sure no one's torrenting while your gaming
I've gone from 250 ping to 30 just by turning off utorrent.
Seedtest.net please

He can still split his upload bandwith using that application.

Again, you miss the point. If you don't have enough bandwidth to begin with, splitting what you don't have isn't going to remedy the situation.

Yea this man - please do a speedtest.net
Sorry for the late reply, I somehow managed to forget about this thread
Anywho, here are the first 3 speedtests (For clarity!)

I doubt that's any good
Oh and as a bonus, I kept a speedtest I did a while ago, and found it crazy:

I thought you said you had 7 Mbit download? That's well below that. On a connection that bad, you aren't going to fix the lag no matter what you do. You'll either have to put up with it or get a better connection.
That is not good at all, 7mbs connection and you're getting that. I would suggest investigating for torrent use.
Depends what he was doing/other people were doing while he was speedtesting. Also if his plan is 7mb he would never get it anyway.

I'm allotted 7 Mbit from Time Warner, but I usually get between 12-16 Mbit.
I have Cox (Yes that is the ISPs name) and am given an estimated 12mbps. I get 10-12mbps.
[editline]now[/editline]
Snakess is right though, you should make sure no one is online while you speed test.
yea make sure nobody but the computer your useing is online when you test
