I dont know about if its released in other countries but this is for the UK

why did they skip the 8xx series...

8xx launched as mobile parts?
bought a 970 alongside a 27" gsync monitor :)
Today (Yesterday now I guess since i stayed up all night looking at reviews and stuff) I started looking for new computer parts, and it also happened to be the day that these were released. Lucky day for me! I picked up a 970 for my new PC.
I'm going to get three 980 for my upcoming build in a week or so
Can I use DSR with my GTX 780? I don't plan on upgrading my GPU for a while.

They skipped the 800 because the current 800 mobile are Kepler. They were going to release the maxwell mobile under 800 as well, but realized it would be confusing as fuck trying to differentiate an 860 kepler and 860 maxwell, so bumped that to the 900's. Since the desktop models came out after the 800 mobile, and are maxwell, they went straight to a 900 naming scheme for them.
hope the 7xx series goes down soon. i have no reason to go with the 9xx series.
A friend of mine was at a Nvidia event and was one of the first people to win a 980

Those are some impressive power consumption numbers given it's performance, almost 100 watts less during gaming sessions compared to nvidia's previous flagship, the 780 ti
I'm stuck on the fence between an Asus Strix GTX970 and a Gigabyte G1 GTX970 (MSI's GTX970 isn't an option unfortunately). Based on the reviews I've read the Gigabyte G1 is slightly better than the Asus Strix but is also $25 more expensive (not much really but if I can save money I will). Is there anyone here who has either GPU and can perhaps help me in deciding?
Go with the one that has higher clock frequencies. Otherwise it doesn't really matter.

the asus one turns its fans off when it isnt under load

I really wouldn't consider that as a selling feature. You can easily do that yourself by defining a custom fan profile. The binning of the GPU and maybe the cooler performance matters the most.
Just built my computer. Installing the drivers for this bad boy right now. So excited.
I ended up just going with the Gigabyte G1. While more expensive it has a higher stock clock speed and is also a good overclocker. The only downside is the length of it, which isn't a problem for me as I have plenty of space in my case. Now I just have to wait for it to be restocked and then shipped.
If you're in Australia or any other place where the new Maxwell GPUs are quite a bit more than in the US it is probably worth checking out Amazon. Comparing the prices of pccasegear.com to the ones on Amazon, you can easily save over $100. For example, the ASUS Strix is $190 cheaper on Amazon.

Yeah I read about that when I was researching the cards. While it is an interesting feature it wasn't enough to sell me on the card. I don't really have an issue with a little noise.
waiting for more reviews/benches before i pull the trigger on a EVGA 970.
and for one to be in stock and amazon..
I feel bad owning four 290Xs now; 290 watt TDP vs 165 watt TDP.

Yeah I saved a shitload off my GTX780Ti. I'll probably wait for at least one or two more generation before upgrading.

I'll just get another evga's 780ti classified when the price drops. If nvidia supports the SLI option for rendering each eye seperatly correctly in the rift CV1. But I doubt that when 9xx series are selling so well beceuse everyones getting double's they'll just say its exclusive and leave my shiny 7xxx series in the dark. fuck sake.
Atleast my classified is still fuckload faster than a OC'd 980. Mine is running at 1350mhz or something. Just hope they also implement direct VR support but that seems even more unlikely knowing nvidia.

I have the EVGA 970, superclocked, with ACX cooler. It's very good. Supposedly the reference cooler EVGA sucks, though.

Glad to know it's good

apparently some people seem to think the ACX cooler is loud, but according to my ears it isn't very loud at all. Compared to my last card, this one has a quieter under LOAD cooler than my last cards IDLE. (Last card was a 5870)
But I have since ordered a different brand instead of the EVGA, since I want to see how much quieter it can be, since my last computer was loud as fuck. this free trial of newegg premier or whatever let's me return stuff without having to pay shipping or restocking fees, so I will get a full refund basically besides the shipping I initially payed which was like $6.
The one I ordered is MSI brand, it apparently shuts the fan off when it is low temperature, so when I am just browsing or not doing anything the cooler will be making zero noise, which is neat. (Seriously neat compared to my last card's idle)
The EVGA is good though, honestly I probably wouldn't be returning it if I hadn't already ordered the other one, since I don't see how this could be considered loud at all
I bought the regular edition zotac 970. Hope it's as good as all the other 970's, it was the only one I could find in stock. Upgrading from a 670 so idk how much of a boost it will be.
Going to wait for the ASUS GTX970 STRIX to come back in stock.
$349 on Amazon or $549 locally in Australia.
Jesus christ this is a no-brainer.

*sigh*
hopefully nvidia's compression stuff means the 6gb suggestion is just a suggestion
of course, Amazon ran out of stock, and they are going to ship when back in stock they refunded my card so that's cool.
and i got the ACX 2.0 so it should be quiet and amazing.
I ALWAYS buy EVGA no matter what because of their support and warranties.
