James O'Malley, writing on the Gizmodo gadget site, said the change proved there was just one rule when it came to buying a smart TV.
"Buy a dumb screen, and plug something smart into it," he said.
That's exactly what I was thinking.
Sadly it's kinda hard to buy anything >40 inches that isn't jammed full of smart shit. Unless you buy some no-name chinese TV
We use a generic universal remote on our TV because the "smart" remote chews through a full set of batteries in two weeks and half the features on it don't work
I love my Chromecast. Even though my tv has a native Youtube app, the Chromecast is just so much easier to use.
If only TV manufacturers put more effort into dumb TVs with great panels and good I/O, and added value by launching their own smart dongles or something like that.

Probably not gonna happen unfortunately, but a good in-between would be a TV with a built-in Chromecast

It's straight up cheaper to buy a dumb TV and a Roku than to buy a Smart TV
Instead of putting Pentium IIs in your TVs smart tv developers, do what Samsung does and make some sort of Evolution Kit
I'm constantly astonished by how laggy many TVs are. Considering how much intense shit you can do on a phone, imo there is no excuse for a TV to lag for even a few milliseconds when you flick through channels too fast or bring up the guide. And then you get to the Smart TV apps and you might as well just give up in a lot of cases

My Sony TV's YouTube app operates the same way as a Chromecast. As in I can control it using the Chromecast button on the YouTube app on my phone.
Doesn't matter though, still use a Chromecast (v1).

Pretty sure that's how all implementations of the YouTube app work on TVs, just saying

Not all. Some are just ass. I assume the newer ones are like that.
