We've got this laptop, see, and we were on the internets one time and it suddenly BSODed. Now it BSODs whenever we try to start it (including safe mode). It gives the stop code 0x00000024. Might have been a bad idea to browse ED without any malware protection. lol.
Well a quick google reveals it's an error in the file that controls something with the filesystem so I think you're hosed
Do you have the Windows installation CD?
TH gave you his virus. :v: Pretty much what P7 said.
Do you have the Windows installation CD?
nope lol uh oh [editline]04:27AM[/editline] so I can't get any files off of it?
snip - read op wrong :/ [editline]05:11AM[/editline] I was going to say take out the HDD and use it as a secondary in another computer but it's a laptop
can i boot frum a seedee and get the fyles off that wey?
2, If you are unable to load Windows. Then you should try to access your ntfs partitions by making a ntfs boot disk
hey try that.
how do i do that?
I would slam the PC into safemode (boot from CD, (with the fucking Windows CD in it)) go into recovery console when it gives you the chance. Do chkdsk /r afterwards.
You've got several options. Unless you have a Windows CD you're OS is pretty much fucked. If you can obtain one you can repair your OS. If not then your best bet would be to salvage all your documents by using a Linux Live CD and copy all your documents on an external.
Here's what i did: 1 - Take the HDD out of the laptop. 2 - Connect it to your Desktop computer. (If you have one) 3 - Scan it with whichever antivirus program you prefer. (Remove anything suspicious) 4 - Then, put it back and test if it works. 5 - If it doesn't work Put it back into your desktop, then make a copy of all valuable files (pictures, movies, other things you don't have another copy of.) 6 - Format the thing. 7 - Put it back into the Laptop. 8 - Install OS.
Alright, reinstalled windows. I have a new problem now, though--no drivers installed! That wouldn't be a problem, except that I don't remember what devices are in the laptop. I have a wireless card, a motherboard, and a graphics card, but I don't know what their model numbers are and Device Manager is listing them as unknown. Is there a way to see what I've got so that I can get this stuff up and running?

What do you mean "look for the product number/model?" Look for it where?
Like, does it say "IBM PROCESS-DOER 3000" on the laptop somewhere? Or a name like that.
Oh, you mean the laptop. It's a Dell Inspiron E1705. Trouble is it was fairly customizable when I bought it.
Damn, not so sure on how to help you then.
I found the drivers page for it, which narrows things down a lot. What if I just download multiple drivers for the devices I'm not sure about and try them one by one? Will that fuck up my system?
Look up your laptop on Dell's website, they usually have all their models drivers on their site.
Heh heh it was secretly ME all along My laptop is fixed! Posting from it now. Thanks guys! Now I just need to (re)fill it with Steam games.
