Out there in the big wide world known as cyberspace, there is a lot of free software that can take the place of WeGame. (if you dont know by now what that is, WeGame is basically a program that records what is on your screen during a game and saves that as a video file for your entertainment needs.) The problem is, most of those programs suck, have limited functions until you buy them, or can only be used on certain games, much like WeGame.
So, my question is, does anyone know of a FREE program that can record whatever is on my screen for as long as I want, includes sound recording, and isnt limited to certain games? (also something that doesnt bring my puny 2.5 ghz single core to its knees, too.)
I know im asking for a whole hell of a lot at once, so anything that includes just SOME of the criteria would be appreciated.
1. not limited to certain games
2. Free
3. can be turned on/off with a press of a button ingame
4. includes sound
5. doesnt bog my comp down too much.
Xfire works, atleast with more games than WeGame.

-Get a new PC, because there is no such recording software that meets this criteria. Recording software must take lots of processing power.
-If you want to record games, you'll have to use WeGame or Fraps (I recommend Fraps). It's less than 40 USD. I'm sure if you can buy a PC game then you can buy Fraps.
Also, learn C++ and make your own recorder
Xfire
Anything that records in decent quality is probably going to rape your comp imo.
You can try Xfire and just have it record in lowish quality like people have mentioned.
xfire, set FPS while recording to 60, set half size
xfire, set FPS while recording to 60, set half size
lol
30fps max tbh. Half the space and for editing you don't need any higher than 30.
yeah but then you're not halving your FPS while recording
yeah but then you're not halving your FPS while recording
Your game FPS won't go any slower, that's just how fast fraps captures the frames.
that's not how XFire works

at first I thought it was just recording slowing my games down untill I realised it was constantly 30
If he can even get to 60 fps while recording with his comp, the difference in file sizes alone will attract him to 30fps. Even then that difference is so minimal that it's not worth it.
If you're making a vid at over 30 fps you're just wasting hdd space.
CamStudio.
No, camstudio sucks when recording games.
No, camstudio sucks when recording games.
Not if it's a lightweight game, like an emulator or most of the smaller freeware games.
xfire, set FPS while recording to 60, set half size
No, set FPS 30 and full-size, file size is same but quality is a lot better.
get fraps
Fraps isn't free
-Snip-
I'm a dipshit.

When you're recording stuff you're not thinking about yourself, you're thinking about the viewer.
Also, every uploading website out there(like YouTube)doesn't support that high framerate, and if don't own pro video editing software you can't even export at that framerate.
why's everyone on about file size? record video, use video, delete video. It's not like you're going to need 300GB of game footage on hand "just in case"
HWMonitor works the best. Its the only free light weight screen recorder/webcam I have ever seen.
HWMonitor? That doesn't record stuff, that gives you info about your PC
When you're recording stuff you're not thinking about yourself, you're thinking about the viewer.
and the viewer isn't going to have a fun time if I do shit because my FPS spacks out constantly and can't record a good vid, unless you're doing staged stuff

what the fuck are you talking about, HWMonitor is for watching system temperatures

I wasn't complaining about filesize, but it's actually a factor.
Etc. when i recorded me time-lapse(hurr advertising) i had so many files that it took up 377 GB
(me deleting it)
And all those files were infact with no sound and 10 FPS.

You can record stuff ok at 30 FPS
GameCam
FRAPs is only laggy because its writing it to your hard drive, and its a fuckton of data.. You need a high-cache fast (maybe 10,000 RPM or ssd, but at least lots of cache)

Don't record to the same drive that the game is installed on.
Yeah, but you also need a relatively fast drive. Usually 16+MB of cache and 7200 RPM.. 10,000 RPM preferred
Usually 16+MB of cache and 7200 RPM
That's pretty much every drive on the market.

Whops HWMonitor is right next to VHScrCap and I wasn't thinking.

I remember when I was actively recording BF2 matches daily and keeping them over time so I could work with them later.
With over 1.5tbs of storage, the difference between 1gb per minute and 2gb per minute was still a pretty fucking big deal.
If you're actually editing/working with the footage in Vegas/AE, you can't delete it until you render your final product and if you ever want to go back and work with it you need the original files so it's nice when you're not taking up twice the space when you're rendering the final video at 25-30fps anyways.
