Wow, obvious troll post.
Doubt you'll find one for $500 though judging by the results on newegg.ca

Just buy a $300 netbook, and pick up a $50 external BD-Rom reader/DVD burner.
no trust me you want a bul-ray laptop.

Netbooks can't play Blu-Rays, unless they are ION
believe me, I tried

Yeah, the ION 2 netbooks really are worth the extra money. :D

My shitty single-core Pentium 4 with 768MB RAM and a GeForce 5200 FX can play Blu-ray movies just fine, so your argument is partially invalid.

OK, SATA to USB might cover that, but then how are you supposed to power the drive?
Besides the drive costs 50 Euro, which is $70.
Unless you're talking about buying an external enclosure, in which case, you'll be better off buying a USB Blu-ray drive that costs $90
[editline]ewf[/editline]
besides, even in an enclosure, you need a power source, whereas if you get a USB drive it draws its power from the USB port
Just make your own 12V SATA connector from an old 1A transformer brick you have laying around.
Interesting, my mom got a Gateway laptop for Christmas that had an Intel i3 and Blu-ray for only $470 USD for Christmas. I can't find it online though. Maybe it was some sort of Christmas deal.
There is a lenovo on the newegg site for 749 with a blu ray player
Shit, any laptop can be equipped with a Blu-ray player. It just needs at least an i3 CPU or so, the GPU really doesn't matter unless the CPU is shit, because most movie players don't leverage hardware decoding by default, with Windows media player being the most widely-used for playing movies on laptops and pre-builts. I recommend PowerDVD for Windows. Hell, WMP and WM Center don't even recognize a Blu-ray movie, which is just pathetic. Look how long it took Windows to include an MPEG2 decoder for watching DVDs? That shit should have been STANDARD in Windows XP.
</end rant>

If I'm not mistaken, XP probably didn't include it because it costs extra licensing fees to include DVD playback software. So it relies on 3rd party software.
I believe that's how they got around it with the Xbox. They made DVD playback an accessory.

...but there are free, license-free MPEG2 codecs out there, if they would just look around. The 360 plays DVDs, so that's such a dumb reason to sell the functionality separately. I'm still pissed that I had to hack the DVD playback feature back into my Wii because Nintendo was too cheap to add a software player channel.
Lowest price on Newegg.ca is $709.99

Here's one from Gateway, although I have no idea about the availability of those in Canada.

The original Xbox couldn't without buying an add-on or hacking it. Nintendo is the same way, except they don't give you the option without hacking it.
And were there free codecs back in 2001 that didn't have any stipulations about being included with paid software? Remember, XP is 10 years old. DVD playback in PCs wasn't standard yet. They probably didn't feel it was really necessary to have it. Many people still used VCR's at that time.

Yeah, that was 10 years ago I suppose... but Windows 7 was touted with having Blu-ray support without the need for third party software, yet Windows Media Player/Center won't see the Blu-ray. There's no excuse for that.
Why don't you just buy a normal laptop and replace the optic drive with a BR drive afterward?
It's pretty much impossible to find a laptop under $500 with a BR drive build-in.
[editline]26th January 2011[/editline]
Also @ the external BR drive option:
Forget it. It's too much of a hassle to carry around, needs external power, and SATA-USB bridges are often slow as hell.
how many biebers do we have here?
