• Old Notebook Locks Up

I recently received a HP 15-G023CL Notebook from a friend who wasn't using it because it would completely freeze from time to time. I went ahead and wiped the HDD and installed Ubuntu 16.04 which worked fine initially. I was able to set up my account, install all the programs I wanted and updates needed. Then the next day it would freeze almost immediately after logging in. No mouse movement, the LED for the caps lock wouldn't engage, CTRL+ALT+DEL did nothing. I've run MemTest86 and the onboard SMART HDD test, both of which checked out. Any ideas?
is it possible to boot into console after logging in? i believe on ubuntu it is ctrl+[f-numberkey] or alt instead of ctrl
is it possible to boot into console after logging in? i believe on ubuntu it is ctrl+[f-numberkey] or alt instead of ctrl
Doesn't seem to work no matter what I press. I've also noted that it seems to crash within the first few minutes of being turned on. If it doesn't crash, it's smooth sailing until I put it to sleep or shut it down. Then the cycle begins anew.
the only possible things i could think of is a bad os install or a failing computer part (cpu, motherboard most likely)
the only possible things i could think of is a bad os install or a failing computer part (cpu, motherboard most likely)
I stress tested the CPU for a good half hour and nothing happened... meaning it could be the motherboard. Someone suggested it might be the BIOS, but would that really matter once the OS kicks in?
