Well the title pretty much says it all. I'm looking into getting the PII X2 955. Should I consider going with a lower-end quad core instead?

Oh look, a box. Thanks.
Just get the 955.
quad
I left you a box and so did somebody else. Why are you surprised? you fucking garbage man, you're supposed to take our boxes

You'l need those boxes for shipping.
Dual if your building a gaming pc or Quad if your a artist and a 3d modeler.
Whatever suits your budget.

shut up
High end dual > low end quad

How exactly did you get a PII X2 955. The 955 is a quad. I'd know, I have one.
Unless you have a relatively tight budget, there is no reason not to get a quad core. Apps are only becoming more and more optimized for quad cores, although with a lot of current software, faster dual cores can be better than slower quads. Personally, my next CPU will have no less than four physical cores.

God dammit eyefinity.
Quad's are for 3d modeling, open rendering of 3d models, and CPU intensive games such as GTA IV and Crysis.
But if you're playing source and simple games that run on DX 9, get the X2 because it's a high end dual core and it runs great.
Plus, if you're going with a Quad, at least get a high end one because low end sucks.

uh no, the low ends don't suck. The q6600 is still an incredible CPU. I have one. It kicks ass in anything, just get whatever your budget can handle. If no budget get a fucking i9 when their released.

Exactly. The Q6600 is a great overclocker and one of the best out of the Core 2 Quad series.I know because 3.6Ghz STABLE on air from 2.4Ghz is amazing for a oldish CPU.Its definatly a legendary CPU.

I though Q6600 was mid-end?
I though Q6600 was mid-end?
it's theoretically low-end by today's standards, but in practice it's still fucking amazing, especially given how old it is
My Q6600 was running at 3.4 GHz on stock cooling for nearly three months before I got another cooler. Still never went over 60C.
gunfox ain't stopping me
Buttsexv2, the q6600 doesn't run very hot anyway.
I know the Q6600 is a beast, but i mean like the Q8200 or Q8400 as low end.
I know the Q6600 is a beast, but i mean like the Q8200 or Q8400 as low end.
Thats low LOW end.
Dual core sucks, I had one and it was overclock to 3.4ghz and it was still unable to play most games like call of duty 4, Unreal tournament 3 and TEAM fortress 2! Upgraded to a tri-core and never got low fps anymore.
The tri-core or quad core will do, tri-core is good for low budget.
I have phenom II X3 720 BE 2.8ghz OC to 3.0ghz

uh what dual core was it before?

It all honestly depends on what dual core.
uh what dual core was it before?
AMD athlon X2 6000+ 3.0ghz OC to 3.4ghz
i got great FPS with my E8400, he must of had a shitty dual core
How exactly did you get a PII X2 955. The 955 is a quad. I'd know, I have one.
Ditto.
It's bloody brilliant. I love my phenom II x4 955.
AMD athlon X2 6000+ 3.0ghz OC to 3.4ghz
What? I'm still running on that, It's a good dual.
AMD athlon X2 6000+ 3.0ghz OC to 3.4ghz
Also an Intel Core2duo 2.5ghz is the same speed as a AMD athlon X2 6000+ 3.0ghz :P
Yeahhh that's not that great. The AMD dual cores are great for budget machines but not high performance. That said they're awesome for a casual gamer or multimedia PC.
What? I'm still running on that, It's a good dual.
It's an alright dual core cpu, but it's not great. Good for budget builds but nowadays it's more economical to get an amd phenom II quad IMO.
Currently I'm using Phenom II X3 720 BE @ 3.5 GHz w/1.456v. Runs WAY better than my old Athlon X2 7850+ @ 3.0 GHz. I'd recommend you get quad-core, with the arrival of DirectX 11, more games will be multithreaded.
Plus, it'll be more futureproof.
[editline]07:47AM[/editline]
I recommend the new Phenom II X4 965 with C3 stepping. TDP went down to 125 watt and overclocks to 4.0 GHz easily on air.

If you're out of budget, Phenom II X4 810 is good too, make sure you have good motherboard to overclock it because it doesn't have the black edition.
