Read the title please.
Has to be able to record sound. Has to record at a DECENT frame rate.
I have tried (And didn't like.):
BSR Screen Recorder 4
CamStudio

It does NOT have to be free.
Fraps. How have you not heard of it before?
Are you trying to record in-game, or out of game?

You might want to specify, so that someone can help you better.
Out of game.
Well, I only know of two screen capturing programs for out of game.
HyperCam2, and Camstudio. I use camstudio, and if I remember correctly HyperCam2 is free. It's basically the same thing, though. I can't remember if it records sound, though.

That's the download for hypercam
Aren't those pretty slow though?
Not from my experience. When I've used it, it's been perfectly fine. But various computers will get various experiences.
I'm not an expert at this, so take this with a grain of salt, but I believe it's about how fast your HDD can write. If it writes slower, it'll get a worse product. If it rights faster, it'll look better. If you want, I can show you how it turns out for me.
fraps can record the desktop
Hypercam is okay. I guess it will work. Thanks!

That's new to me. I wasn't aware of this. I knew it could monitor your desktop, though.
"i didnt mean to"

That's for recording the desktop? I thought it only monitored it. But since I rarely use fraps, I never actually tried it out.
Well, OP, if you have fraps, you can use that too.
Fraps can monitor Aero, and record it as well. So im not quite sure if it can record XP, since it shows as "Record Aero Desktop (DWM)."
DemoCreator - desktop recorder for tutorial and presentation.

Other than the price, but yeah Camtasia's amazing.
I like Expression Encoder.
Made by Microsoft.

try jing, i have not tried it yet, but my friend showed it to me, it's free, but the pro version is $15 and lets you swap from your screen to your webcam while recording.
Can someone suggest ME a good screen cap for live broadcast?
Camtasia's performance is great. I record 1920x1080 at 24fps with no skipping even in Adobe After Effects.

Jing only works well with small recordings.
from my experience, Fraps' ability to record the desktop doesn't really work that well and it only records when a part of Aero is active

so for it to record smoothly you need something constantly moving, otherwise it's going to record a lot of clone frames

Probably because DWM's frame rate is so variable. Doesn't stay constant like games / DX/OGL apps.

If you're wanting to do small recordings just use screenr.com
Nice, compact, and no download required.

what do
XP?
close, server 2003
then why are you even asking, DWM (Aero) is specific to Vista and 7
because it would be nice to be able to record my desktop with fraps, what other reason could I have to ask?
