Well, they're most likely selling the console at a loss, so it's not completely insane.

But I will admit it's stupid you have to pay for Skype, netflix etc
How is this different from the 360, though?
I'm amazed people expected different..
Fuck, I'm more surprised it was the BBC to rant.
But seriously.. it was the same with the 360 so I never saw them changing it..
And yet people will buy shit shit because hurr durr xbawx
In addition, on the Xbox One the annual subscription will let players share videos with friends.
This stuff sounds so weird and Dystopian from a PC perspective.

Shit that we do for free console kids will happily pay out the ass for.

You are however forgetting to get a decent recording of a game with max settings, it also requires a good rig which costs a lot more than an Xbox.

The Xbox One is pretty much marketed as an all-in-one media box and paying extra just for the main key features is ridiculous.
I won't be surprised if soon you'll have to buy gold to simply use your console.
Zach, how much MS paid you this time?

Want to breathe? Xbox Live Gold required.
How is this different from the 360, though?
They're locking a feature that the XBOX One is specifically built to be able to do unless you cough up $60 a year.
So basically nothing about XBL has changed at all.

you are paying for an incredibly costly set of services. you're not paying extra for key features dont kid yourself.
if you don't like their business model then don't buy an xbox but to expect them to NOT have you pay for all the services they provide is ridiculous of u
I don't like the title. How are these KEY features? These aren't key features to a video game machine at all.
I love how you have to pay for Gold and Netflix to watch Netflix on Xbox, but on Playstation, all you have to pay for is Netflix. It stupid to have to use a paid service, it cost you more to use it on some box, which is free on other boxes. Why the fuck would you even buy something that cost you extra money for no extra content?

Because servers that millions of people are constantly connected to cost money?
Edit:
XBL isn't just an internet connection. Everything is routed through Microsoft servers for some part of the process, if not all.

They arn't expecting you to buy gold just to watch netflix. If you don't want to pay for gold im sure you have 5 other devices that are capable.

A XBox One with enough years XBL Gold will cost equally to a PC with an OS that can do much more than play triple-A titles of which many aren't worth the money. The only valid reason I've heard from console users is that they don't have the experience to and don't want to mess with PCs. And most console users also have a PC which makes the console a bigger money waste in the end.
Exclusives don't count. The PC has them, too. Actually, the PC offers a much wider range of games that aren't released on consoles and the mods can help towards PC exclusivity.
The only reason I spend a lot of time on consoles is because my PC is a mediocre piece of crap that can barely run games. If I could upgrade I would but I just can't afford it right now

Try +£50 on top of the price quoted there for a PSU that isn't a bargain basement backdoor £17 piece of bollocks and you're right. It's also missing an optical drive. But I agree for the most part, consoles are toss.
As for the article, yeah that's the same as a 360 really.
In all fairness, in terms of XBL vs PSN, you're getting a much greater online service with XBL.

You make a good point I didn't realise. Bare in mind I wasn't trying to back consoles up entirely, I'm not a massive fan of consoles and I believe PC is the way forward. But when I said that I didn't take into consideration how much Xbox Live actually is.

Explain this to me, why the fuck should you have to pay for access to services like Hulu/Crackle/Netflix/HBO Go when every other device in the world lets you do that for free?

If somehow Netflix is being routed through Microsoft servers, they're doing it wrong and they should fire their programmers because every other device in the world manages to do it just fine. The only thing that is being routed through Microsoft's servers is a check to see whether the user is gold or not.
