• ATI 5750 latest drivers cause massive problems

When I first got this ATI 5750 about a month ago, I had to use the stock drivers off the disc, because the latest drivers basically turned the card into an Intel laptop graphics chip but worse; upon booting up, the windows 'welcome' screen scrolls slowly on and off, the icons on the desktop disappeared and reappeared, pages scrolled very slowly and laggilly in my browser and Skyrim decided to auto-set my graphics settings to the lowest possible, whereas it was high with the stock drivers. The stock drivers worked fine, but there was a strange aliasing problem with certain games and recently I found Civ 4 would not work with the original drivers. I found some legacy drivers for the card(10.12) that were newer than the stock but older than the newest and Civ ran fine. The problem with these drivers came when I tried playing Tribes Ascend and Red Orchestra 2. Both of these worked fine before on the same settings, but now caused my computer to freeze up, requiring a reboot, about 15-30 seconds in. On Tribes this could happen on the main menu, probably due to it's menu being more graphically intensive, but in RO2 only happened in-game. I tried the latest drivers again but suffer the same problems as before. Can anyone help me with this? Specs: Windows XP Home SP3 Intel Pentium D Dual core 2.8Ghz Raedon HD5750 1Gb DDR5 4Gb DDR2 RAM ASUS P5KPL-SE MoBo E: I've tried some slightly older drivers, 10.10 and Tribes and RO2 now seem to work.
The thing you have to understand is ATI drivers have always sucked. It's even worse for older cards, as they don't get bugfixes and newer driver versions generally start breaking more stuff than they fix. The HD5000 series is now two generations behind, and I don't think that Catalyst versions above 10.8 are going to help you any. I have a HD5870 and I think the best version of Catalyst is probably 10.5 or 10.8, every other release has some severe problem. Besides drivers, you should check to see if the card is overheating.
