What is a CPU on a server or a GMOD server used for? I was wondering as I have an option to upgrade CPU power, will this affect lag or something? I am not sure. I am also sorry if this is in the wrong thread, I thought since it contains technical info (CPU) I could post it in here???
sorry, but if you seriously have to ask this, you should not even be using a computer. a cpu is one of the very basics of a computer or server. Gmod is not multi-threaded, so you want as high of a clocked cpu as possible 3.0ghz+ is best
Sorry, but if you seriously think clock speed has anything to do with single-thread performance, you should not even be using a computer.
Differences in CPU architecture mostly decide what kind of performance you'll be getting, at what clock speeds, voltages and such.
Intel is crushing AMD at single-threaded applications right now, so you'll want to look in that direction.
While it does have to do with single thread performance, clock speed alone means nothing about the single thread performance of a processor. If that makes sense.

Lmao, at least do your homework before talking down to other people like that.
Christ this whole thread is a trainwreck. All these fools arguing with eachother over who gets to call who dumber.
As for the actual topic of this thread, Regzo, It depends on what this server is to be doing, how many people, etc.
The CPU of a computer, or server, in your case, processes everything that everyone does on the server. You blow up a barrel, the cpu calculates the explosion's effect on every fragment of the barrel. The CPU will only cause lag if it is too slow to calculate what you are doing.
Most common form of lag is ping lag. This has nothing to do with your cpu or the server itself, the common cause is shitty wireless connection, could also be crap internet speed (<500kb/s actual), ISP ripping you off, server provider ripping you off, etc.
If your server is doing just fine as it is, then there is no reason to spend money on it.
If you are building one, here is some of my advice:
2-6 players:
2Ghz+ Dual core or better
1Gb Ram
Wireless or Ethernet connection with 600kb/s actual speed or higher
6-10 players:
3Ghz Dual core / 2.4Ghz Quad core or better
2Gb Ram
Ethernet only connection with 1mb/s actual speed or higher
12-16 players:
2.4Ghz Quad core or better
4Gb Ram
Ethernet only connection with 2mb/s actual speed or higher
Side note: It does not matter if Garry's mod is dual-threaded or not, multiple cores and threads help with background processes, and no one makes a single core performance cpu to begin with.
If you need more slots you probably don't want to host this thing in your house.
It would cost quite a bit to set up, and would be much cheaper to rent a server for the time that you want to have it.
There are security vunerabillities associated with port forwarding and networking a server, anyways.
If you aren't very computer-smart, I would recommend just renting a server, see if you are up to administering it before delving into it further.
Remember, you need upload speed to host a server, not download speed as most of the ISP advertised
This means that your 10 mbps internet wont cut it if its upload speed is severely gimped like 500 kbps or so. This means that you need to take a speedtest of your internet and compare its upload speed to the recommended speed above me

If you're only hosting a srcds (and not playing on the same PC), you will not need 4gb of RAM. Highest I've ever seen a server use is 700mb.

Now that we're actually discussing the topic.
It really depends on what OS he is running, if it is server 2012, which is based off of 8, or if he's also using this server for other things (which you can do by the way, no need to have 2 boxes just for 1 to sit in a corner all year), then it makes overall performance smoother.
Also 4gb is very easy to come by in any computer that meets the rest of the requirements, so there really is no reason not to anyways.
I'll admit it's not necessary, but after using seeing how Minecrap, and RoR servers love to plop their fat unoptimized asses on 2gb+ ram after sitting for a while, it's better safe then slow.
