• Building/Upgrading gaming computer, $600 budget

Ok, my computer is pretty old, and I think it's time for an upgrade. For example, it can only run up to direct x 9.0 games for the most part. My ideal budget is $600 USD. It can be a little over (although I would prefer not), and can be no more than $700. I live in the continental USA. For the most part, I will have to upgrade everything. However, there are a few parts that I want to reuse, if possible. For example, my case. My case is MicroATX and I would prefer to not have to get a new one. My PSU is 250 Watts, something tells me that's bad. My disc drives are all IDE, so I don't think I can reuse them. (they are all pre DVD ROM anyway, so I wouldn't want to.) Peripherals, such as keyboard, mouse, and monitor, do not have to be included, as I already have all of these from my current computer. I'm not sure about my monitor's native resolution, but I would wager that it isn't much higher than 1280 x 960. I guess that the actual parts that I will need are a motherboard, graphics card, hard drive, disc drive(s), cpu, heatsink, gpu, and ram. There are probably more, but that's all that I can think of right now. As far as motherboards go, I was hoping for something with a few expansion slots. Hard drive size does not matter as long as I can fit the operating system on it because I have an external terabyte harddrive. Applications that would be ran on such a PC would mainly be games. If this build could run any game currently on the market on at least medium settings, it would be ideal. As far as my own abilities go, I have upgraded my current computer's ram and installed a graphics card and a tv tuner card, so as long as I read the material that comes with the parts I should be fine. What's GPU you installed in your current computer? It can be reused. also do you need an operating system?
What's GPU you installed in your current computer? It can be reused. also do you need an operating system?
Oh yeah, sorry. My current GPU is AGP. ATI Radeon 9800 XT. Like I said, it can't do above direct x 9.0. Yeah, I do need an operating system. I would prefer something 64 bit.
These are my current specs: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=15b0c41af018f914&sc=documents&uc=1&id=15B0C41AF018F914%21113#

If you want you can scrap the 5770 and get a stronger 5830 but it was out of stock so I couldn't add it to cart, same price as 5770 though.
combo deals tennant, g43 + 2500k [editline]21st June 2011[/editline] overpaying for ram aswell, get ripjaws 1333
I was going to check the combo deals then I thought fuck it I'm too tired so I didn't, and I can never find good cheap ram either I just pick whatever I see first that is cheap, it was just a quick mock-up of what you can get for $600, you can get quite a lot.
he should get a new case anyways, mATX gives you basically no upgrade path whatsoever. he would probably be better off with an amd build at 600
Go for it mate, but he said he doesn't mind spending $700 so just slip in an ATX motherboard and a budget case, shouldn't be over $650.

I have quite a few games from the early 2000's that were made for Windows XP. Will I still be able to play them on Windows 7 without "XP compatibility mode"?
yes
