I don't know. Should I remove them? What should I do? [editline]23rd March 2014[/editline] Also would highly appreciate it if someone could introduce me to a better free anti-virus program.
They don't appearantly look malicious. Did you create the shortcut links yourself? Those are not actually Steams files, but shortcut links, hence the ".lnk" extension. An alternative free anti-virus, would be Avast! Home Free, or even AVG Home Free (although the former is what I would personally recommend.)
Just checked D:\Steam There were no .lnk files. [editline]23rd March 2014[/editline] Not too long ago, I was infected with Sality.Win32 and I think it created .lnk files under folder's names/icons, basically it created a buttload of shortcuts to C:\
The files may be set to hidden. Try viewing hidden files. Also, I feel sorry for you, but it's time to move to another operating system to avoid these kind of issues. As Microsoft ceases their bug fixing support, Windows XP will be a incredibly insecure operating system.
As Microsoft ceases their bug fixing support, Windows XP will be a incredibly insecure operating system.
It's been Swiss Cheese in regards to security for years. Another issue is that Valve may drop support for XP, so Steam will no longer work. They did the same thing shortly after Windows 98 and 2000 stopped being supported.
Just upgrade to Windows 7 and get Microsoft Security Essentials. Then, you'll probably wanna upgrade your rig.
