That's right, android is coming to Verizon. All we have is this announcement.
Update:
Washington Post article
Verizon and Motorola finally lifted the curtain on their new Droid Android phone yesterday. Make no mistake, this is Android's flagship product, and the first phone that will pose a significant threat to Apple's iPhone. And it will be available very soon, possibly as early as the end of this month.
MobileCrunch has been tracking the phone, which has also been called the Tao or Sholes, for some time. Just about anyone who has come in contact with the phone can't stop talking about it. And from what we hear, they have good reason.
The phone is a three-way effort between Motorola, Verizon and Google. It looks a lot like the iPhone, and may even be as thin or thinner than the iPhone 3GS. It also has two key advantages over the iPhone ¿ a slide out physical keyboard, and use of the Verizon network.
Unlike previous Android phones, the Droid is rumored to be powered by the TI OMAP3430, the same core that the iPhone and Palm Pre use, and which significantly outperforms Qualcomm 528MHz ARM11 based Android phones that exist today (Engadget has a great overview article on mobile CPUs).
Droid will also be running v.2.0 of Android, with a significantly upgraded user interface.
The Droid poses a different and more significant challenge to the iPhone than any other phone to date. The Palm Pre could have been that challenger, but it lacked the Verizon network, and users were unimpressed with the hardware. According to people who've handled the device, the Droid is the most sophisticated mobile device to hit the market to date from a hardware standpoint. When you combine that with the Verizon network, you've got something that is most definitely a challenger to the Jesus phone.
And the scary thing for Apple is, it may only be a few months before something even better than the Droid comes out. With the flood of Android devices that are hitting the market, a few are bound to be hits. No wonder Google CEO Eric Schmidt is so bullish on Android right now. Things are about to get very, very interesting.

Lots and lots of Big Red’s customers (not to mention potential defectors from other carriers) are getting really excited about the purported launch of an Android-powered, Motorola-made mobile for Verizon. New images of what was originally known as the Motorola Sholes, and more recently rumored to be named the Motorola Tao, have surfaced on the Interwebs.
More specifically, they’ve popped up on an unofficial Motorola Sholes forum over at HowardForums. The new pics mostly show Google Maps (including the Sky view) running on the ‘droid, as well as a peak at an Apps screen, the back of the battery, and the unlock screen. So what’s all the fuss about? These leaks happen to be the first time the phone has been seen turned on, and one of the first times its been “handled” in the flesh.
Unfortunately, the man (er, forum member who leaked the images) behind the curtain, wnrussell, refused to reveal the new DPad or QWERTY keyboard, but hey, at least he was kind enough to post the shots below. In any case, here’s what we’re hearing about it so far:

The battery is rated at 1390mAh, which is slightly lower than the Cliq’s 1420 mAh, but a little bump up from the MyTouch’s 1340 mAh

It’s metal-tastic design makes it a bit hefty, but downright gorgeous, and supposedly nice and thin

Should come rockin’ the latest and greatest Android build upon release, aka Eclair

I bought an Alias 2 a couple months ago. :(
Oh well, maybe when the time comes for me to get another one, I'll try this.
I need to know if it'll come out this month so I can return my phone within the first 30 days D:
It'll be a few weeks, sometime in November.
comp, can you at least divulge if it has wifi and is open source?
It probably will.
I don't understand what this is, considering they give almost zero information on it.

Can you ask? :ninja:
Can you ask? :ninja:
I would be shocked if it didn't.

Someones been out of the loop. It's basically like the G1 on Verizon by Motorola.
I just hope that Verizon doesn't go all ownership on it and make it so that GPS and visual voicemail isn't allowed. They always require those stupid verizon only programs.
This is great news, now I can finally look forward to a replacement for my Env2.
Threw some more stuff into the OP
It's kind of ugly.
I wanna :smithicide: so badly right now. I have a Versa, and would love an android phone.
i heard about this 3 days ago http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/15/motorola-droid-startup-teased-obnoxious-robot-voice-and-all-vi/
Fuck yes contract renewal time. :smug:
It's kind of ugly.
A little disappointing but still pretty slick.
Woohoo! Something to look forward to with Verizon.
My brother's friend got an android from google IO (the G1.) They are pretty sick.
Jesus I didn't even take the time to look at the details about the phone before I commented hoyl fuck.

Verizon always goes awesome with their commercials.
I love the new UI.
I love the new UI.
Looks so better than my friend's G1
I actually went to the verizon store a few days ago, before info on this was out, and asked an employee if they had any plans for releasing an android phone. She said "Well uhh..." and never really answered it. Now I know why.
[editline]10:46PM[/editline]
Can't wait to try my hand at developing for this.
might hold off to get this
Looks pretty awesome. I'm going to be selecting a new phone next April, so it'll be between an iPhone and iPhone competitors...this looks like something I might want more than an iPhone, which is hard to believe.
Sexy.
I just saw the commercial by extreme coincidence (first time every seeing it as Verizon is not in Canada).
I'll probably get one when my upgrade comes around.
I saw an android commercial this morning that made fun of apple. Kinda made my day.
I love my iPhone and it works great for everything, except AT&T is a horrible piece of shit.
I'll be switching to verizon and getting one of these as soon as my contract is up.
[editline]04:14PM[/editline]
Also, in the commercial, "iDon't have a real keyboard" "Everything iDon't DroidDoes" Where's the keyboard?
