Recently, for whatever reason, my GTX 760 will sometimes accelerate its fan speed tremendously. I could be playing a game for hours or sometimes just typing in Word for 5 minutes, and it always - at complete random - increases the fans rpm to nearly 1000. I can tell when this happens because it sounds like an airplane going off when it starts. While its speeding up, my screen goes black for a while, then when it eventually stops my system restarts.
I checked MSI and nothing seems out of the ordinary. Fan usage is at 40%, temperature around 30 celsius, nothing in my profile settings controlling the fan the way I've described it...
I've also re-installed my drivers multiple times and have even downgraded them, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
The GPU itself doesn't appear to be damaged and is installed correctly. I've taken it out and placed it back in again a few times and it works fine. I can't think of anything I've done that would make it behave like this.
I don't know much else beyond what I've already tried, so I don't know what I can do except to ask for help.
Are you keeping an eye on your temperatures when game playing?
Yes. CPU temperature goes up to 60 at the most, and GPU temperature is usually roughly around 50. But it persists even when I'm doing the least demanding of things (using Word, Chrome).
What is your make/model/wattage of PSU?
Sounds like maybe a sensor on-board is failing - thinking it's too high, trying to cool it down, but not being able to cool itself down enough so it restarts to prevent thermal damage

900W
Edit:
Twat. Corsair TX650, so 650 watts.
Could just be a symptom of something else going on, the fans on my old gts250 would spin full tilt if the drivers hadn't been loaded yet or crashed.
Try running memtest86+ and see if that comes up with anything.
I've installed memtest86+ to a flash drive. I tried booting it but it keeps telling me to remove any forms of media (discs, other flash drives) when I did.
On another note, I also tried slotting my GPU into another PCI-e bus. After setting up the drivers, the GPU still behaves the same.
I'll also mention that, sometimes, my screen will just go black then restart, but there's no change in speed coming from the fan. I'm inclined to think this is definitely a software problem rather than a board/hardware problem.

Spontaneous restarting without a BSOD is always a hardware problem
Based on your symptoms I would suspect either the motherboard or power supply. If it were the RAM, you would get BSODs. If it were the GPU, you would get BSODs and/or artifacts, and it wouldn't let you game for hours otherwise perfectly before restarting
I had this exact same problem with my 760.
I sent in my GPU, got a refurbished one, and still it happened.
Turns out, my power connector (the 24 pin) was loose. Make sure both parts of the 24 pin are firmly in the motherboard. If you're unsure, take it out completely then put it back in. If it doesn't work, make sure all other cords are in good as well.
I've reconnected every chord/pin attached to my PSU and nothing seems to have made any difference.
Also, when I boot in safe mode, it behaves perfectly normal.
