For all the talk about how Nintendo is "behind the times", its quite surprising to see someone from them say this.

Sakurai runs his own company, he's not a Nintendo employee.
Hell Mortal Kombat X has had an entire character polished and ready to ship on release date being made into pre-order DLC.
Goro was actually just free for people who pre-ordered. It wasn't pre-order exclusive.
He still shouldn't be paid DLC.
As far as I can tell pretty much every AAA game has had DLC announced and planned before the game even shipped, including the likes of pre-order DLC.

That is usually because they plan it for the period when the game has gone gold and is being tested, printed etc. They've got a lot of devs, sitting around, doing nothing (the ones not involved in bugfixing), so they plan some DLC early on to give them something to work on whilst they still hold to their original release date.

games ship with day one DLC and occasionally with the DLC on disc locked, or there is assets for the content from future DLC that are not complete still in the files.

Except it was developed after Smash was released, Mewtwo took a long time to come out after release, same with Lucas, who's coming in June
He still shouldn't be paid DLC.
Adding and balancing characters that were created post release seems fair to me
The worst kinda DLCs are the ones already on disk, and retailer specific ones, "Don't live in the US or UK? Get fucked"
He still shouldn't be paid DLC.
it's extra work, he should be paid
snip
I get what he's talking about but I find this ironic considering the character DLCs for Smash 4 are like, 5 dollars each.
I've said it many times, but I'll say it again. If it's done before launch, put it in the fucking game, especially if it's in the files/on the disc already. The only exception is for cosmetic stuff that the art team did during bugfixing and certification, but for Christ's sake price it fairly 2K Games.
If you're planning to do DLC after launch, just PLAN it and then develop it once the main title's gone gold. Also, rather than just selling the DLC pieces individually, consider bundling them into an expansion pack.

Goro was done and is in the final game. The new Characters in Smash are being made after the game's release.
He should not be paid/preorder DLC. Mewtwo and Ness are okay as paid DLC as they were not finished and were being worked on after the game's completion/release.
Goro is essentially on-disk DLC.

Considering he was ready before launch and you could unlock him on release day by pre-ordering, I wouldn't say it was extra work.
Yeah it was done in the main production phase, ergo it has come as standard.
You even fight him in the Towers regardless of you having him from the pre-order bonus or not.
I'm glad SOMEONE understands just how bullshit DLC has become.
I mean don't get me wrong, you have some gems in the DLC market. I loved infamous: festival of blood, and I hear blood dragon was pretty great DLC expansion for FC3. I also liked Borderlands content expansions.
But then you have shit like MKX. Unlocking shit you can unlock in the game with actual effort but instead with money. Plus the easy fatality bullshit.

Actually 5$ for both the 3ds and the wii
Is conviently priced
Even though DLC can, at times, be the best thing ever- I think overall it's done more harm than good to games.

Maybe it's because I play more competitive multiplayer games than singleplayer ones but I can count the amount of "good DLC" released in the past 8 years on one hand. Most of it is typically garbage that is a waste of time and money at best, or directly imbalances the game at worst.
Obviously some are really good, like some of the Battlefield 3 DLC's and GTA 4's singleplayer expansions.
I personally really liked the MK8 dlc packs.
Worth the 12 euros.

yeah its set a kind of standard of what I expect DLC to be handled its one of the better packs I've brought that's for sure

I liked Civilization V's expansions.

It's strange how everyone thinks Nintendo is behind the times but they always seem to sell perfect DLC in the perfect manner.
They're really weird, so forward and down with the customers in some aspects and in others they, well... hate YouTubers.

Yeah, with all these new characters and courses it became the ultimate mario kart experience for me. Hell i can't wait to invite some friends to play local like we usually do. 200cc is also really fun
Mario Kart 8's DLC is god damn amazing. You get a lot of content for the price you pay for, and you get a discount if you get both, which seems to be the norm for Nintendo's DLC practices.
