I just borrowed a HDD of a friend, it's a WD Elements, and I plugged it in, gave it power and a Windows message pops up " Installing drivers for device . "
Another window tells me that the driver is installed properly, and everything should work.
Well, it doesn't.
I can't find ANY data on the disk, a reformat isn't an option, vital files are on it and I need some files from it.
I go to the " Computer " window, where HDD's and usb pens are shown, it's not there.
I can't find it anywhere, and I tried plugging it into another Win 7 machine and a linux machine, nothing happens.
Does anyone have a solution for this?
Right click my computer and go to disk management.
Does it show up in there?
Also have you tried another USB cable as it could be just a faulty cable.
I tried two cables.
Wdbaau0010hbk is the name of the HDD.
I found it in " Units and printers ", named " Initio default controller ".
At disk management, is that the first? ( Using a danish version of Win 7. )
When I press that I can only select properties, layout, and folder and browsing options.
It is pissing me right the fuck off, as it works on my friends computer..

No, disk management should show all of the HDD's connected to the computer.
Not sure what one on the list it is though as I'm on Ubuntu at the moment.

Shitting double post.
Uhh.. the harddrive isn't even spinning..
Dad is suggesting that it's the power supply of the HDD, friend changed it cause the old one broke and sprayed sparks when he plugged it in.
It lights up and everything, works for him too. But my computer won't recognize it as a memory drive..

It might be not showing up as a HDD because of the disk not spinning AKA: you have to fix that problem to make it show up and work as a HDD.
If I ever have had problems with external hard drives, I"ve usually just removed them from their case and plugged them straight into the motherboard, no third party controller necessary
Hmm.. I'll try that when I get home.
