So I would like to build a dedicated server specifically to host a Gmod server. I do not know how feesable this is or if it's possible at all given my resources. I have a $200 budget and a Dell Inspiron 9150 that I can (hopefully?) salvage parts from. Before anyone asks why I need to build a server when the dell would work decently; it is because the case is way to large for me to have around. Also I would like to have some experience in putting together a computer. Here is my speedtest: And here's the specs for the dell: Link Edit: So I attemped to make my own build and I think it came out all right: With this build I'm going to take the HDD's and the computers Pentium D. This is my first time really putting a build together other than dicking around so it'd be great if someone could tell me what to add/remove/change.
Get some DDR2 RAM and if you have an HDD alaready then you are good to go. If you get more money, buy a new mobo and a CPU. I would wait for Ivy or get a cheap server or something from Ebay.
But DDR3 memory is cheaper, is there any benefit to using 2 over 3?
No, It is for upgrading your Dell.. That only takes DDR2 RAM. DDR3 won't fit in it
Oh, no. I'm not upgrading, I'm doing a whole new build because I the current case is way to big. So I'm salvaging the HDD and CPU from the dell and building a new rig with it.
still need o get ddr2. and that case won't fit that cooler I think.
Why? The motherboard says it supports DDR3. Link And Yeah, I thought that might be a problem. Is there something else that would fit?

I dont think people are understanding what im wanting to do. Currently, I have a Dell computer that is too large and ugly to keep it where it needs to be. I wouldn't change the dell if I didn't have to because it's a decent computer. This is not an upgrade, if anything its a downgrade and I realise that. The Dell is of no use to me as is. So I want to make a new build with a new, slimmer case salvaging the HDD and the CPU from the Dell. I've attempted to make a build that should be everything I need for a home server I'm just looking for suggestions for additions/removals/changes. These are the components that I picked: The case The memory The motherboard Along with the HDD and the Pentium D to save money as I only have a $200 budget for additional parts.
The case links to the motherboard. [editline]11th January 2012[/editline] buy motherboards strip down to PCB construct case from motherboards most expensive flimsy case
My bad fixed now.
interesting choice
I need it to be slim and that should fit my needs. If you can reccomend a better case I'm all ears. Edit: So should I go ahead with this build, I'm pretty confident with it but I'd like to hear others opinions first.
Looks fine.
