It was definitely a misplaced comment but both TL2 and PoE are amazing games, no reason to bash either.
Probably the only game where i managed to lose my character on the screen due to all of the particle effects and shit going on.
A+/5 would buy twice

Honestly, Torchlight is also grindy. Some of the stages just take forever to complete with the same enemies.
I prefer Torchlight II over Path of Exile but I don't really know why.
But since PoE is free and TL2 has a demo you can just try both to make your own opinion.

Hop right on in. There's a cutscene that explains what happened in the last one (correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't played the first one so I wouldn't know for sure.)

there is pretty much no point in getting the first game, TL2 is superior in every way, and the story from the first game is explained pretty well in TL2 but it's not that interesting anyway. the gameplay is the real fun.
