First of all, let it be known i'm mostly a computer illiterate and i've never ever ventured inside the hardware and software section.
Well, according to minecraft forums, you won't be able to play multiplayer alpha with Windows service pack 3.
My answer? install SP2 instead.
The situation: i got the disk for SP2 ready, i know how to boot the CD and i then go to repair
and very very early it asks me
''Which windows instalation would you like to log onto?''
A question which i would like to answer service pack 2, but well... it accepts only one letter of sorts and, well it may sound ridiculous for you, i don't know what to do.
Feel free to mock me as long as you help, thanks in anticipation.
I could try to snoop around with it but ever since i deleted my directx in order to try to fix something i've decided not to ever mess with shit i don't know what can cause.
I don't see why minecraft wouldn't work with SP3. You didn't even say what version of windows you have.

Problem:
You're running Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Solution:
Run Minecraft on a Virtual Machine on your computer, or use one with a different OS. Sorry!"
I've tried asking facepunch what to do but they didn't seem to care that much so i went to the community and found this, then i went back to them to ask how to fix it then they didn't care either so i tried fixing it by myself, then i am at this current problem, also let me check the version precisely.
Computer sez:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3
Minecraft does not work with sp3? What a horrible game in terms of compatability.

I agree but i aint waiting them fix it, i'd rather fix it myself.

Which drive do you have Windows installed to? (Presuming C, as that's standard)
Even then, that will just get you to the repair console. And if you don't know what you're doing, won't help you at all.
Well i definitely don't know what i am doing, i'd appreciate your help.
Hang on i'll try to get back the tutorial my friend sent, he had to go from skype, that's the main reason i'm stranded in this situation.
this is it:
If you purchased a computer that had SP3 slipstreamed/pre-installed, then it's a little more involved, but not difficult. You will need to have an XP Disc with SP2 on it. It does not have to be your disc because you will use your current Windows Key that came with your system. Borrow it from a friend, or there are other "various" ways of getting your hands on a disc. Just boot your system up with the SP2 Disc and perform a "Repair" install of windows. It will go through and re-install a number of system files and such, and you will be required to reinput your Windows Key. Once back up, you will notice that SP3 is no longer installed and SP2 will be in its place. Also note that this did not affect any files, applications, etc that you had on the system. In effect, it left everything how it was and just downgraded SP3 to SP2.

You will have to do a repair INSTALL.

Ay thank you very much, i'll go back to it and attempt it once more.
If i don't come back tell my PC i love it.
Minecraft Multiplayer Alpha works just fine with Windows XP SP3. Just tried it in Windows XP mode (which, in case you didn't know, is WinXP Pro SP3 inside a virtual machine).
I don't know who answered that question, but they're dumb. Did you even try to run it before you started fucking with your computer?

Actually yes, my internet dies.
I'll listen to you before going and try this, what you think might be happening?
I connect to a server, my internet simply stops working, out of nowhere.
Then i have to reboot for it to work again.
Edit: no answer... well i'll go and try the new repair method, BRB.

Oh just great, the repair function is not one of the options, as said in the tutorial makuuta sent me...
Reading the warning 2 thing...
[editline]29th November 2010[/editline]
Well damn the other alternative ways aren't very viable... well god damn it...
I'll try setting the virtual machine thing later on.
Also abby, i'd be glad if tried to see what's going on with my minecraft.
Have you tried running the game in compatibility mode for SP2 within SP3? Been a while since I used XP so the option might not be there.
