My vocabulary and grammar is very poor because for most of my life the teachers put me in a special room to play with toys all day instead of teaching me so I never got a real education.
Does anyone know of a free and no registration required website that can help me learn new words? This year I will be taking an academic class for the first time in my life and I am scared shitless.
read a dictionary for half an hour a day, and practice using new words in proper contexts while speaking (or for that matter posting). But don't include more than a few new words in average convo's unless you have a reason to use them. And especially do not try using big words to make yourself look smart, when simpler language will do.
I suggest reading some verbose/vocabulary-heavy books
I recommend along with the dictionary reading, I recommend you try reading some classic novels or more complex ones. When you stumble across words you don't know, look them up in a dictionary. You'll not only learn new words, but you'll have a great example of how to use it in a sentence
read books that interest you and look up words you don't know
sure you can read a dictionary but that sounds boring as hell
Read a lot, write a lot. While writing, try looking up synonyms to words to keep things from getting to repetitve/stale, you'll learn lots of different words and the way words relate to each other that way.
Essentially read/write a lot if you wanna learn fast.
read a lot of books, I like to think I have a pretty broad vocabulary (despite how much I swear) and I owe it both to my upbringing, and my access from a young age to a lot of interesting literature. Reading and doing creative writing work hand in hand to give you new words, then teach you how to use them.

Basically this. Read a dictionary and start adding words to your regular vernacular. Gradually though, shoving too many big words into one conversation just makes you look like a douche.

You just reminded me of one particular user.
Oh and I learnt my vocabulary from shows, learn more from the internet, read a lot of encyclopedias in books and over the internet and that kinda broadened my language a little bit more.
Sometimes, when someone brings up a new word, I keep googling it in an online dictionary and try to understand the term. Thats how I know most of some complicated words.
Although the other advices seem to be more efficiently. I'll try those too! I think it was a fatal mistake, that I never bothered reading books in english.

Is that good or bad? :v:
I used this site to study for SAT's, it starts off easy but gets harder. I guess they also donate rice or whatever

Echoing what other people said here, reading a variety of books will definitely help you. Also this place might be a good spot to check out: http://thesaurus.com/ they have a word of the day that could help you learn something new every day. You can also type in words you do know and learn tons of related words to it and find out how you can use them in sentences.
Don't be scared of your new class by the way! I'm sure it will go great. And if you really needed, maybe your teacher(s) could help you out too.
Thanks for the advice.
And to be specific I only want to learn big words that are not synonyms to simple words that already exist - for example I'm not going to replace embarrassed with abashed every time I type or talk.
Practice practice practice...
Honorificabilitudinitatibus, Antidisestablishmentarianism, Floccinauccinihilipilification, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnkonnbronntonnerronntuonnthunntrovarr-hounawnskawntoohoohoordenenthurnuk
