Sent my 16gb touch in for repairs, getting a 32gb back

So my warranty was almost up on my touch, and I noticed that the battery life wasn't as good as it used to be.
I called up apple, and set up a repair. They said that they couldn't find anything wrong with it, so they sent it back. I opened it up, and was greeted with a scratched up screen. I've kept my ipod in a case and with a screen protector on since I got it, so as you can probably assume, I was pissed.
I called up apple again, and explained what happened. The guy talked to me for a few minutes making notes on my file, and told me that I might be able to get a replacement, but because my warranty was up, the chances were low even though it was sent in under warranty and returned scratched.
I said thanks, and hung up, as I wasn't going to take it out on a guy who had pretty much no say in the matter.
That was a few days ago, and this morning I woke up to this in my inbox:

The email address was an @apple.com one, and the number is apples, so this is legit.
I called him and left a message, and just sent him an email with my shipping address.
I'm assuming that I'm getting a 32gb because the 16gb was discontinued with the 3rd generation.
tl;dr:
Sent ipod in, got it back scratched, called apple, got an email asking me to confirm my address so I could have them ship a 32gb.
Okey.
Lucky.
Pretty lucky man, really got a great deal out of it.
trolls...
Things like this never happens to me :saddowns:

Because getting lucky means he's lying, right?
You lucky, lucky bastard.
I dunno why, but with iPhones and iPod touches they don't repair them, just send you new ones. That can be annoying when trying to sell them, with different serials, IMEIs, etc.

Maybe it's just as expensive (if not more) to disemble them, find the problem, fix it and then put it back together again?

This, it would cost Apple too much in man hours to have every iPod repaired, it actually works out cheaper to replace the entire unit, and send off the damaged goods to be, and I quote "Destroyed by fire".
I should try this with my 16GB iPhone 3G.

I should try this with my 8GB iPod Touch first gen.
The battery life sucks, there's no warranty, and it's jailbroken. :saddowns:
I might send my iPhone 8gb in. I got it for christmas and I think the lock button is half stuck down. Unless it's meant to be...
That would explain why I have to pay more than half to "fix" my iPod

exactly
Same thing happened to my friend a few weeks ago.
