I recently built my self a second PC to function as a temporary Source game server of sorts, but after overclocking the X3 720 in it to 3.45Ghz, I'm not longer sure if it should remain as my secondary PC. My main PC has a Q6600 at 3.0Ghz, with 4 GB of DDR2-667, while my secondary PC has an X3 720 at 3.45Ghz with 4 GB of DDR2-800.
I've been unable to find proper benchmarks of either CPU overclocked, so I thought I might as well ask FP.
Which one is superior? Benchmarks would be nice to see as well.
Stop wasting your time and get a 360

Already have one, it's been sitting on my desk for the past 2 months unused because it's not nearly versatile enough for my needs.
Those processors are pretty evenly matched, what other hardware is different?

Pretty much assume that all the other hardware is the same, considering that I would just migrate my graphic card/HDDs/anything else over to the other computer.
Uhh, make benchmarks yourself? You don't need any special software for that, you need to know which one performs better in the programs and games that you actually use.

Won't differences in irrelevant hardware cause discrepancies though? My secondary computer is currently running on like 8 year old IDE drives with an 8800GT, while my main is running on 2 year old SATA drives with an HD4850. Since I'm going to transfer the drives and GPU to the computer I start using as my main, won't that affect benchmark results?
Regardless I guess I should try running my own benchmarks.
The hard drives shouldn't make any differences in most benchmarks. Special cases are hard drive benchmarks and games that stream the content from the hard drive while you're playing, those could get a little choppy. As for the graphics card, you should run games on lowest graphical settings anyway. That way the gpu won't be the bottleneck and you'll be able to see the cpu's full capability. Different gpus will still probably make a bit of a difference, but you could always try swapping it. It takes like half an hour to put a new gpu in and install drivers.
Also, you have some quite decent computers and you put an 8 year old hard drive in it, what the hell? The slow load times don't bother you? Is there even enough space on that drive? Unless you're talking about cd/dvd drives...
Is that X3 a tri-core?
Why even bother buying tricores?

Because it's like $130 and gives you a shit-ton of performance for the price?

I thought the next best quadcore with the same clock was for like 10$ more?

My budget was something like 300 dollars so I ended up reusing ass old IDE drives from 2001 and from 2004, 120Gb and 160Gb of capacity respectively. I never intended to use it for more than just testing Windows 7 and running a Windows based source server, so.
Regardless the HDDs aren't that bad, they score something like a 5.5 under the Windows 7 Hardware Index thing. I haven't checked their exact read/write speeds with a synthetic benchmark, but they don't seem to be too bad at their job.

The 720BE has the full cache of a 945 for only 3 cores, giving it pretty good performance per core. The next up 810 X4 has crippled L3 cache meaning that performance isn't significantly superior to that of the 720BE. The lack of a fourth core and unlocked multiplier also mean that it OCs like crazy, so in this case the 810 really isn't worth it.
The 720 is.

Buying a tricore is buying a quadcore with failed core.
DO YOU WANT A FAILURE AS A PROCESSOR?

Hurf durf tricore is failure.
I heard sometimes you can actually activate the 4th core again. Is that true?
I heard sometimes you can actually activate the 4th core again. Is that true?
Yup.
they deactivate it for a reason you know
I wonder why people assume that because they CAN activate it it'll work properly

I hope you know much of an idiot you sounded like when you posted that.

But lots of them do work perfectly.

Pretty sure it was troll.
