She wants a screen that's not too small (bigger than 15 inches), be able to do basic things (she's says she will use it to work at home, doing stuff with Microsoft Word and Excel) and something that will remain stable and work for long periods for less than $1000. Any advice on what laptop to get?

When you use a laptop around the house you probably don't need it on battery for ten hours
I'd recommend one of the Lenovo Thinkpad T500 laptops, they're just brilliant in build quality and reliability
yeah but a long battery life is great if you want to go sit on the couch and a power plug isn't right there, or just want to out and type.
The 6-cell standard in the T400 and T500 can last around a good four hours doing things such as word processing or internet and swappable batteries only cost $60 each
Hm, looking over all of them,

seems to be the cheapest but still seem to get the job done.
Get a Toshiba Satellite notebook. I have one, works pretty well for the price. It comes with a bunch of pre-installed shit so you might want to reformat it when you get it.
YO MAMMA need a laptop! Wait..

DELL DELL DELL
is fine, most of the stuff I see where they break or what not is from moronic teenages who put it in a back pack and put books ontop of it then drop it down, or leave it on there bed and dust cloggs it up, or they download limewirepro off limewire then complain dell sucks.
they are fine office computers when used for office purposes with a good IT guy who will put the extra 256mb overhead system ram in there, they are perfect of office use. If you need a jack of all trades lenovo is a good brand as it does stand the test of time, but papers a dell will work
