Computer monitor doesn't pick up sound from optical cable

I just got a digital optical to 3.5mm cable and my monitor's not picking sound from the 3.5mm jack. I have an ASUS VG248qe, what can I do to make it play sound from the cable?

Is the volume turned up on the monitor?

Maybe it doesn't work or is not properly plugged in? Or maybe you have to choose in the windows settings to use the optical output as default.

Optical output is set as default and it's plugged in so tight I can't pull it out (I'm serious, I can't get it out)
