Every year I have to replace my backpack becuse it either breaks or sucks too much. I'd imagine with people here having their expensive laptops have decent laptops.

What are you using it for? If you need to go hiking and have access to a laptop for your job, get something like the High Sierra suggested above. If you have a city job, a nice leather messenger bag would be much more practical and stylish.

Something like this would be nice looking in formal and informal scenarios and would definitely protect your laptop.
And if you don't want your bag to fall apart, make sure you get a nice bag. Don't go to the dollar store and get the first one you see this time. $100+ from a reputable maker will be nice. The $300 bag may be excessive but expect for it to last the rest of your life.
What about Samsonite?
Get a Dakine or Eastpack. They cost a bunch but really last.
Eastpack even gives lifetime warranty on its zippers and seams.

My eastpack has lasted me for 10 years. (7 of which are school and college every day)
My Dakine is only 2 years old but did travel across more than half the planet with me.
I dont know anyone here in the Netherlands that doesnt own an Eastpack., and Dakine is also getting more and more popular.

Dakine has 15 and 17 inch laptop bags. The thickness doesnt really matter as I more than once carried a sony vaio laptop and a binder + papers in the laptop compartment alone

I have a brown North Face Surge, really love it. Its fairly light but extremely strong, water resistant, has a sleeve perfect for 15.6" laptops and plenty of storage space for books and other supplies
