Questions about Apple and their Apple Care plan...

Well my MacBook has been having problems with the battery and its telling me that I need to take it in for service. Screen will randomly shut off for a couple mins and turn back on and I lose everything I was doing. Like if I would close the lid, but it happens at random times. On top of that the screen has been cracked for awhile from my brother steeping on it. I checked online and it still has the Apple Care plan until next year of October. I'm just wondering what info they would need when I take it in and what I woud have to already need to be done to my MacBook. Problem that I have is that it was registered to my brother from his college, and when he left the school and moved to Texas, he left me this laptop.
* What info will they ask me for? Would I need my brother's email/password/any other info?
* Will I need to back up everything on an external HDD?
* Will they keep my laptop for a couple days till they can fix it? Or will they fix it in front of me?
I'm new with Apple's support system, and I just wanna know what will happen. I've tried using apple support's chat but it is unavailable everytime I try.
I haven't had much experience with Apple, so the most I can do is wish you the best of luck. You might get a better response asking a mod to move this to Technical Support though
Posting about Macs is suicide around here.
This thread probably belongs here though. http://facepunch.com/forumdisplay.php?f=397 http://facepunch.com/forumdisplay.php?f=107
Ill try to help anyway.
Based on my experience with Apple's support, they'll probably just need the serial number and an address. They'll probably ship you a box to send the mac in for service. I would back everything up just to be safe because, when I've sent iPods and phones in, they've always been reset to factory specs when I got them. It took me around 1-2 weeks to get everything in order. It may take longer though since you have a Mac.
However, if you don't want to ship it, you can probably take it to an Apple store if there is one nearby.
Also, be wary of them trying to extend your Apple Care plan. It's a scam just like any other warranty.
If you have any depraved porn on your computer wipe it off first before you send it in.
