Hey guys, i'm in an extra-curricular class in school, anyways it has alot of different events you can enter in (Mostly Business stuff) and so; i've entered into a "Computer Security" competition. The reason I came to the Linux topic is because the Compentencies ask that I show security knowledge in both Windows (No help needed,) and Linux. What would the be the best verison of Linux to do so in? I mean, being able to run smoothly in VMWare, understanding how to "harden Linux systems and services." From what I know security isn't really a problem with most or any Linux OS's, so this confused me. It would be great if anyone could point me in a good direction OS wise; and any other advice you'd like to give me.
I dunno if this is what you want, but http://www.backtrack-linux.org/
What Linux OS do you see fit the best for what i'm trying to do?
I have a hard time thinking that you are a going to do well in this competition since you are using IE... If you are really going for all out security in Linux, SELinux is a must. Take a look at Fedora since it includes SELinux by default and is a great distro in general. Here is a link: http://fedoraproject.org/
Selinux Fedora, RedHat or trustedDebain, if you want to try FreeBSD is is regarded to being one of, if not the most, secure OS on the planet. But then again BSD isn't totally linux.
if you're doing penetration testing, backtrack if you're preventing penetration, gentoo-hardened if you're masochistic and preventing prevention, netbsd
If you're looking into how to harden linux, look into SElinux. Comes standard on most Red Hat Based Distros
