leaves it in the dust
it's even better if you're a classic Sega fan. So much fan service
Is the multiplayer alive and functional? I heard people were having problems with it and racing CPU in these games always gets boring fast for me.

Very much so. The game is great and there's always a game going on.
Collision detection is really odd in multiplayer though. Sometimes getting hit by another player can send you flying in a completely random direction. This isn't frequent enough to ruin everything but it is frequent enough to mention.
I paid full price for this game and I don't regret it a single bit.

I've had my eye on this game for a little while now, always liked racing games, might be the right time to get it.
Awesome, last Kart game I've played was Double Dash. Can't wait to give this a try.

I wouldn't say that. I think MK still holds the top spot for tightest controls and physics.
But this game definitely has a lot 'fairer' of an item system, i.e. nearly everything can be avoided with proper timing and driving skill.
bah, this game looks really fun. wish i could pick it up.

Personally I think Crash Team Racing holds the crown for that one, but it's also a pretty different feel than Mario Kart so that might just be preference.
For me Crash Nitro Kart is my childhood racing game.
In this game, watch out for players that are highly experienced with the game.
My friend has already finished the game against AIs on the highest difficulty many times and done plenty of online matches. I decide to race him after getting used to things, every race I'm left in 2nd place, 20 seconds behind him.
I was expecting this game to get slammed like "sorry, it's too late to make sonic kart" but now you've got me tempted.
I still think that Double Dash is the best kart game, however this game beats Mario Kart Wii and 7 completely. The boost mechanics are much better and make it a fast, fun and nervous game, every part of the game can be played in splitscreen, the campaign is great. So far my only complaint is the weird collisions issues against extremely laggy opponents, which is quite rare.
Also it's worth noting that the PC version is greatly optimized and is receiving numerous patches to enhance the game and extend support to even older graphic cards.
