"Generic PhP" Laptop Monitor not Displaying lighting properly

I have been having this problem since I first got my Asus G74SX-A1 Gaming Laptop, but I just can't find anyone who understands this problem.
I first noticed it when I was playing a game and I saw that the darker parts of the game are barely visible,
as if after a certain level of darkness everything goes pitch black, and my monitor can't correctly detect darker colors.
I tried looking for solutions about calibrating my display, so I brightened up the gamma, I can see a bit more but it looks all pixelated and messed up.
I think my monitor just can't handle most dark shades of black, and just goes to pitch black.
I feel that I am not explaining this properly, but it's all I got.
I think you have a faulty monitor, I have my xbox360 plugged into a vga monitor in my room, and it occasionlay does this, that said I have dropped the monitor once or twice. How long ago did you get the laptop? If its recently then you should try to get it repaired or a refund.
LCD monitors have pretty much always been horrible at contrast in dark color ranges. The only thing you can really do is up the gamma/brightness if you want to see the darker areas. The downside to that is the rest of the picture gets washed out in the process.
I bought myself what I thought was a nice 22" LCD from ASUS, and it had the problem really bad. I promptly went back to CRTs out of disgust.
