I was going to make a witty joke about the Intel i7 but I realized heat jokes are old/
Anyways, im using a Intel Core i7 930 at stock speeds with a stock HSF. The motherboard is an ASUS p6x58d-e. The processor reaches about 100C when playing intensive games, and it idles at 55C. I've tried about 6+ times installing the heat-sink/fan cooler but my processor still decides to run at such awful temperatures.
I think theres a problem with the way I installed the heatsink though, but I tried every way possible so far.
Are there any things I should try?
I stopped using thermal paste because the amount of attempts so far is ridiculous, and theres still some left over anyways.
Also, is there any chance of a bad processor?
:ohdear:
Thermal Paste?
you need to take off the thermal pad on the cpu cooler beofre applying cpu paste
Yeah, ive been applying thermal paste but ive just decided to lay off until I think I get it right.
Also, theres a thermal pad on the cooler? The stock one came with paste already on there...are you sure?
Ah. There may have been a slip or something covering the actual thermal paste on the CPU (so it didn't get messed up in transit or anything).
Check to see if it's on there.
I recently discovered my Phenom 9950 running at 56c load,so i checked out the specs for my processor and found that my motherboard was running the voltage at the maximum specifications for my cpu.I turned the vcore down to the midrange and have no heat issues anymore,it runs at 45 load.I also have an asus motherboard.

According to the specifications posted here http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=41447(dont take my word on it,please go see) the VID should be in this range 0.800V-1.375V check in the bios if this is the voltage you have.

Wait what? 45C on load? thats cold.

Yeah,I ran Prime95 while encoding video for 3 hours and 45c is the warmest its gotten.
My i7 920 has started to reach 98C. I'm worried.
cooler?

You might want to get a new cooler before your CPU becomes a puddle of molten silicon.
If you're using the stock cooler, CHECK IF ALL THE SCREW THINGS ARE PROPERLY LOCKED IN PLACE.
I know they're hard to use, but if one of them is loose your temperature will skyrocket.

This, this, this! When I first built my old tower with a Q6600 (I had never used Intel in a custom build at that point and was unfamiliar with their heatsinks). The pins are a bitch to get in, and if they don't click, no matter how hard the cooler seems to be in, it isn't making full contact with the processor. This will make your pc overheat to hell.
Also Intel stock coolers are as cold as the Sahara.
