So I have a dog named Cassie, and when my family lets her outside (she's a rather spoiled dog, when she wants you to take her outside she'll bother you until you do it), we always let her out on a chain out front or out back. Well, not literal chain of course, but it's the same concept. As per a nightly tradition, Cassie bothered me to take her outside in the middle of the night and I usually let her sit around out there for half an hour to an hour before going out and letting her off the chain, back inside. Sometimes she likes staying out there longer so I just let her stay out until she wants in, but never for more than two hours.
When I go to check on Cassie out front and call for her, she's not there, and I don't hear her shuffling from around the corner of the house that she likes poking around behind sometimes. Call for her a few more times and nothing. The front of my house has an upraised little small patio with no fence/rail/whatever, and the chain is tightly hooked around one of the base legs of it, so I check the chain to lightly tug on it and see if it got her attention. Instead, I find the chain short - it tore off at some point while she was outside.
Not wanting to wake up my mom and dad in the midst of their sleep, I went back inside to get my shoes on and grab an LED pocket light that's pretty effective for how small it is, and started calling for Cassie with an outright astronomical amount of panic, searching around the side of the house she usually stuck around. I probably should've been even more panicked, but the last time Cassie got loose from her chain by someone just not properly attaching the chain to her leash, she just sorta lazily wandered around the house; I guess I thought the same was going on. After calling her name about four times, thinking she might be nearby, I then hear something from around the house. One more call to confirm it was reacting to said call, and it happened again. I go to the back of the house and Cassie's at the back door, underneath a more proper, upraised patio that leads to the second floor/kitchen of the house (it's a weird set-up).
What's weird about it? She was hooked up to the chain out back, to the point that somehow her chain was looped around the legs of the back patio like they always were and she was kinda stuck. This is impossible considering she had to of had half a chain dragging behind her limply before this happened, and no one in my family's awake to do that.
I go back inside the house, unlock the bottom back door, let her in and give her a bone and some water as she wants, and everything's fine. But not only did this happen only 20 minutes ago, there wasn't even a neighbor coming by and saying anything about this, nor was there any logical solution I could think of as to how she got put on the chain out back. All I know is that I feel sick to my stomach after freaking out over that, goddamn.
