So I recently discovered that my house has Ethernet running through it, but it is not set up. What I mean it there is a sort of "bank" where all the wires come together where I assume I would plug my modem or router into. The problem is, it looks like a big mess of wires to me and I really don't know where to start. Does anyone with knowledge of this things know how to do this? I'll include some pictures of it to give you a better understanding of what's going on. Sorry for the quality, my only camera is my phone and there's pretty bad lighting in the storage room where all of this comes together.

I don't actually know how that will help me, sorry.
You don't need that big a patch panel though.

You will probably want a patch panel and a few short Ethernet cables to wire into a switch/router.

so I'm assuming the thing in the first picture is the patch panel, so I'll just need to get a switch?
Check the pinout, it will help.
That looks like a fucking mess... I would have shot the guy that didn't organize all the wires a little...
I would if you are going to do it properly, it keeps things nice and tidy.
I doubt he even has 15 cables.
Sweet jesus that's a fucking mess
Looks like a fucking mess to me.
12 by my count.
Thus, 48 is 4 times too many
That pic was just an example, you can get significantly smaller patch panels.
okay, thanks guys, I think I figured it out. Going to MicroCenter tomorrow to pick up the stuff I'll need.
Get yourself a gigabit switch, most routers come with one. If your ISP gives you a router make sure it has a gigabit switch. If not, you can plug your modem into a gigabit switch and share files at gigabit speeds. However, the more switches plugged into each other will increase your ping by a few ms.

Yep, I got it all set up on Sunday and made sure to pick up a gigabit switch while I was there. My router is actually pretty high quality, so I figured it was a good idea. Internet went from 5mb/s down and 2mb/s up to 32mb/s down and 11mb/s up, so I'm pretty freaking satisfied. Thanks for all the help people!

What speeds are you supposed to be getting? Trying to decide whether or not to get a gigabit modem... everything else is gigabit in my house.

Get yourself a continuity tester and find out where those individual cat cable drops end up at then zip, strip, and clip. Then setup a nice little patch panel, plug them into a router and then a modem and you're good to go.

I think I'm supposed to be getting 28mb/s down and 10mb/s up, so I guess I'm getting more than I payed for, which is a first for Comcast.
