• Joggers on the road in winter

Why is it that people jog in the road during Winter? I can understand the need to work out but I can't understand putting safety on the line for it. Do any of you see this go on or be one of the people who do it? If you jog in the road, why? I'd honestly feel it more intelligent to get a gym membership and jog in an indoor track.
people just like running outside better, it's a different experience than on a treadmill. plus the roads are almost always going to be plowed whereas sidewalks might not be
Or just jog on the sidewalk?
Or just jog on the sidewalk?
Not all places have sidewalks. I lived in a rural area for most of my life and when I went on a run, I had to do it on the road. I'd never do that in Chicago, however, or in a town. Places with high traffic are just too risky, especially in the winter.
Or just jog on the sidewalk?
In some snowy areas, sidewalks usually have a considerable amount of ice if plowed at all so either way is dangerous.
I see people do this all the time here in Australia even though there is never snow, it's really weird, I don't get why people do it.
Being all on your own in the snow on an empty road is pretty satisfying. Also it's too hot inside at the gym.
Or just jog on the sidewalk?
Sidewalks are basically clear, wet ice here. Not jogging on that, nope. Just walking to work along them causes trouble. I just jog on a treadmill and get super-bored during winter.
Roads are way more clear where I'm living right now than the sidewalks. Cars driving constantly on it after it's been plowed breaks down the ice, whereas much-lighter people walking on mostly-shoveled sidewalks packs the snow down into ice. It's much safer to run on the road, so long as you're visible. Also treadmills and tracks suck.
You get a much different experience running outside on uneven terrain (even roads) than you would ever get with a treadmill, its a lot harder to go the same distance outdoors as it is indoors. Also like others were saying, it gets too hot in a gym and you either get too hot or have to wear extreme minimal clothing, but outside in the winter, you can wear enough to keep you warm and then let the cold cool you down.
One thing that baffled me last summer was the amount of runners on the side of the road near the area where me and my dad have our motorbikes stored. It's a rural area with lots of forest-areas to run in. Yet those people prefer to run on the side of those curvy roads with bad visibility, risking getting hit by a car and just breathing in all that road-dust.
I see a lot of runners going to and from work on a very rural country road. They very rarely step off the road and I usually don't mind because I can see that there's no car in the on-coming and I can give them lots of room. But when joggers don't just hop on the bank when they hear a car coming around a corner (all corners are blind corners with all the hedges) it really annoys me. Like I either have to completely stop or even go in the other lane. But there are lots of cyclists and horses too, so really I just have to concede that I am always going to have to be the one to make room for others.
