• Stalled partitioning process... Afraid to force shutdown

Alright, I'll keep this short, since I'm on my iPod. I was trying to make a small partition (5GB), on my hard drive using Minitool Partition Wizard. I started the process, which prompted me to restart, since the drive was in use. For about 70 minutes it's resizing my main partition, "C:", to make room for the new partition, "D:". I left to go eat dinner, and when I come back ~20 minutes later, I'm greeted with this dreadful black screen: [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Tb4mg.jpg[/thumb] [url]http://i.imgur.com/Tb4mg.jpg[/url] It says this if you can't read it: (1) of (3) operations... Resize partition Partition Letter: C: Partition Label: Disk Index: 1 Partition index: 2 New partition starting LBA: 9066708 New partition size: 143200 MB It's been sitting at that screen for about 30 minutes now, not a thing has changed. I did a quick google and found out this is the screen Partition Wizard displays when it stalls. (not 100% sure though) What should I do? :saddowns:
It doesn't look like it has done anything yet, but I would let it go for a few hours just to be sure.
[QUOTE=IpHa;31264145]It doesn't look like it has done anything yet, but I would let it go for a few hours just to be sure.[/QUOTE] This screen (according to a google search) lasts for several hours before the user decides to force shutdown. I will still let it sit though, just in case. But I still need a solution/answer in case it doesn't change.
in the event that it has destroyed your partition table, you can use photorec to restore it.
Oh and also, it surely has done something, since the progress bar on the previous screen showed 79% for the resize partition process when I left for dinner. I dont think so, but it runs on linux so if you have a live cd lying around. ..
Oh, silly me, I forgot the most important part of the OP! Specs: Win7 premium 32bit 148GB HDD It's a laptop, so it only has one HDD. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] Ok, I just noticed something I didn't notice before... [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/tXWns.jpg[/thumb] The far right light indicates whether or not the HDD is in use. It blinks for a tenth of a second every second or so. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] Come on FP, my data's life is in your hands.... Help me.... :(
do you have access to a spare computer, and a usb drive?
Probably... I'm not sure if my dad would let me use his computer. I do have a flash drive.
Get a LiveUSB of linux.
Alright, I'm downloading an ubuntu 10.1 ISO so I can make a live usb. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] It will take 40 mins to download, at least according to DAP.
Why do you use a download accelerator? [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] Also get the torrent, and kiss that DAP bye
Because my dad is a paranoid person and won't let me download anything, except for this. And, he doesn't have a torrenting program installed. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] And he doesn't want one installed.
Get another USB stick and put portable stuff on it. Or just add a hidden folder on the desktop with your stuff.
Ah, DAP just surprised me with a 30 minute drop in DL time. It's done now. I'm going to use LiLi to create the liveusb. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] FUUUUU- I shoulda known... Corrupted ISO. Gotta start the DL again. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] [QUOTE=Map in a box;31264845]Get another USB stick and put portable stuff on it. Or just add a hidden folder on the desktop with your stuff.[/QUOTE] This is getting off topic. I don't want to go through all that hassle. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] Mkay, this is kind of a noob question... What do I do once I have the liveusb set up? [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] Ok.. I think I have it figured out. When the liveusb is ready, I force shutdown my computer. I then start it up, and boot into the ubuntu liveusb. Then I download & run Photorec, IF my data is corrupted, that is. Am I right?
yes also, next time use gparted to partition your disks. (included with ubuntu)
Alright thank you so much... I couldn't have figured it out without you guys.
I used gparted on a live cd on my dad's machine to resize his partitions, and it worked a treat. Though it did take a few hours, and it is a 120GB hard drive IIRC. Exactly how long did you have it running for before you decided it had stalled?
