Ping skyrocketing in online games after internet speed increase

Pretty much what the title says, our internet had been dying on us frequently and this time when they fixed it they offered us a speed increase 6 meg from 3 meg.
Ever since they increased the speed my ping in team fortress has been dreadful, I'm lucky to keep it under 200 for more than a few seconds before it shoots back up to six hundred. I've tried port forwarding but I'm not one hundred percent sure I did that right. Any and all help is appreciated.
You don't need to forward ports to play online.
I would check your network infrastructure first. Remove any routers/switches and connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem. If the problem still persists then you probably have a dead cable/DSL modem, in which case you need to call up your ISP and bitch for them to send a new one.
If the problem goes away, it's something to do with the router/switch or the networking cables. If you're using wireless, it could be some interference.
I am using wireless, probably should have pointed that out to begin with, Before we had the speed increased there was no interference what so ever, But I'll connect directly and see how that goes.

Wired I an average of about 60 ping, so its just interference I guess, but is that normal for it to increase with internet speed?
If the router can't handle the increased speed then it makes sense why it lags. Most consumer grade routers are shit and crater when put under high loads.
I don't have a separate router though, it's a router and my modem in the same device.
You can optionally just buy another router and set it up as a Access Point or one of those fancy powerline plugs. (Sounds like it's a horrible wireless)
Did you get a new router or something?
