The game, Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time - is one of the first 3d RPGs. It was revolutionary in the sense that the user has a very high degree of freedom in controlling the main character. Originally designed for the Nintendo 64, this game uses a joystick mounted on the Nintendo's controller. The user is free to target objects in the world via moving the targeting crosshair using the joystick. This game is also known for the great deal of freedom involved with finding objects, secret passages, and extra information. All of this exploration is somewhat analogous to locating and following links in hypertext pages. The game and its rooms are arranged in a web, where the user is free to talk to any non-player characters, and wander around completing goals. Due to the fashion in which earlier Zelda games implement fighting, this game uses the same lock-on system used for targeting people to engage in combat. Used in every 3D Zelda game to date, it was quite a revolutionary feature when it was new. http://www.cyberartsweb.org/cpace/ht/kcoane/Zelda/OcarinaOfTime.html Basically if you never played this game then you never owned a Nintendo 64. Revolutionary in 3D game play, few have more then a hand full of minor complaints which in most cases are made up for by the extensive depth if this game. Majoras Mask. This game doesn't so much speak for itself as OOT, but thats not because it isn't an outstanding game. the first thing that caught me about this game was the ridiculous amount of depth. To finish all side quests was fun, constantly interesting, and pretty damn hard. When i found myself attempting to repair the broken heart of a young woman whos husband had been thrust back into childhood, thats when i stopped and said "Damn, this is some pretty deep shit". Set as the sequel to the classic Ocarina Of Time, perhaps the reason MM isn't such widely known is because it didn't revolutionize gaming like OOT did. Still good enough a reason for you to did up your old 64 (Hunt for that stupid ass expansion pack), and find a copy of Majoras Mask. On my original post its worth noting just HOW in depth this game is. As one gentlemen put it:
At first I was kinda meh to Majora's Mask, but then I replayed it, this time exploring EVERYTHING. The depth of the game still makes me shiver. A children's game about accepting the inevitable death? Sign me up! Ocarina of time USED to be my favorite game, but that was only for gameplay, Majora's Mask had a certain depth you couldn't find in OoT Wind Waker was pure FUN, and the style was cool. Kinda weird to imagine that person [sp]STABBING SOMEONE IN THE FACE[/sp] I'm replaying Twilight Princess, and it's one of my fav games of this gen, but still not much compared to the other Zelda games :D Explanation for the first pic: [sp]This event takes place on the third day, if you fought off the aliens. Romani doesn't know the world is about to end but Cremia does. So, for this final night, she is going to let Romani drink the Chateau Romani (an adult only drink within the game's story) even though she isn't an adult and then they're going to sleep in the same bed. So they can die together.[/sp]
Now if you haven't ever played Wind Waker, then you truly don't know what your missing. If you haven't played it because you don't think the animation is cool or you think it doesn't look like the zeldas you fell in love with, thats not an excuse after you read this. It has everything you expect from a great Zelda game, side quests you find interesting, fun as hell dungeons (only Zelda game ever where i truly wanted to enter a dungeon for anything other then to advance the story), great characters, and it LOOKS AWESOME. Once you get playing you really start to appreciate the level of care and affection put into making this game. Besides once you start having to bust out a musical instrument anytime you wanna get anywhere, you'll feel right at home. Ah yes. The newest installment. I wonder if my kids will be playing this like i played OOT. Twilight Princess is the only console Zelda i never beat. Got to the last dungeon. Sister erased game. I ragged. But anyway. Once i got over how cool this game i looked i instantly started fully focusing on the next thing that amazed me about this game. EVERYTHING is fun. Moving around and slashing about had a childish appeal to it just because of the shear beauty. But that was just me. I sweat the small stuff. After i stopped freaking out about minimal shit i got engrossed in this game. When i said i got to the last dungeon i mean in one sitting. I couldn't stop playing. It was Ocarina Of Time but didn't look like shit on my television. Wasn't a major fan of being a wolf though. Never had any appeal to me. This personally is a game i may play a time or three again, but it will never stick with me. It didn't capture my imagination like the others. For some reason it just went over my head. When i played MM for the first time, i realized he did flips and summer salts from ledge to ledge instead of just jumping. This blew my 10 years old mind. TP just..over did it. Great game non the less. This being a game from before my generation, I will do it justice by letting someone else give the the synopsis of this game. Someone eith some years on me. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is the only Zelda game ever made. It firmly established a formula of adventure game design that balanced out overworld exploration, item acquisition and storyline progression, a formula still followed today. Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, even Ocarina of Time – all just copies of the structure seen here. A Link to the Past is the only true Zelda, and Miyamoto and team simply keep remaking it, over and over. It wasn't the first Zelda released. That honor falls on the original NES adventure that debuted in July of 1987. The first Legend of Zelda saw Shigeru realize a vision of a world of epic grandeur, a game space so large that players found each cartridge had shipped with a physical map. The land of Hyrule was vast, expansive. And you could go anywhere you wanted. Which is why Zelda 1 is less Zelda than its follow-up Zelda would be. The first NES game was free-flowing – there was little stopping you from playing through the game's dungeons out of order, and it had no development of story to speak of. The Legend of Zelda was an excellent game, one of the greatest 8-bit releases ever to come from Nintendo – but ultimately, it was a skeleton frame. A Link to the Past fleshed it out. This SNES sequel refined what Zelda 1 had defined, harmonizing the freedom of exploring Hyrule with a more focused and linear flow. You still had some leeway. You still had plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten path, completing sidequests, goofing around. But the entire game is orchestrated – you feel free in your actions and choices, but all the while you're advancing the story. http://wii.ign.com/articles/757/757573p1.html Not me. Loved this game. The end. This is still a rather limited selection. I re-did this thread to try and make up for my total lack of effort and enthusiasm on my previous Zelda poll. I hope i did it justice. Please post any Zelda you think deserves recognition. A picture and a few words will help others get a feel for why that, is your favorite.
I'm a Majora's Mask and OOT guy. [editline]04:59AM[/editline] hated Twilight Princess though...
I personally don't like games of this nature, I'd rather waste more time in the action than finding a lever or a hole to dig.
I don't know about you guys, but my favorite is Link: The Faces of Evil Tbh, I actually can't decide. I've played all the console Zeldas except Link to the Past, which I'll play as soon as I get the cartridge.
Wind Waker [editline]05:17AM[/editline] but i still love them all
I just love how Majora's Mask is so fucking deep and dark. What it lacks in gameplay and main-story, it makes up for in side-stories of the numerous characters. Could someone refresh my memory and post some more?

Peoples dialogue changed, things were different, you felt rushed. The music was my favorite. The music as you hear the clock clicking and the ominous feelings you got. Still gives me goosebumps when i play.
Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.
Link's Awakening > Majora's Mask > Ocarina of Time > A Link to the Past > Halo 3 > Twilight Princess
In terms of current standards, Twilight Princess. In terms of standards at the time, Majora's Mask. [editline]03:31AM[/editline] Even though I spent 80% of my time In Twilight Princess fishing. :v:
Wind Waker, highly enjoyed sailing and the wonderful art style. Made dungeon-crawling very engaging and colorful.
Forgot in terms of story, which in my opinion is also Majora's Mask, but story isn't everything. [editline]03:33AM[/editline] automerge
I've only played Twilight Princess (The Wii was my first and only Nintendo console). I thought it was a great game, I would like to replay it but I sold my Wii. I'd love to buy an N64 and play through the older games but I don't really have time.
Majora's Mask is one of the most nostalgic games for me. I played it before I had played OoT. I just love how serious the game felt at such a young age. I'm actually playing through it right now. The scaling on the N64 with a 46" HDTV is kind of icky poop though.
Where the fuck is Phantom Hourglass?
What about The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages Those were both great Zelda games
Personally i'd say Zelda: A link to the past. Maybe thats cause i never had a nintendo 64 tho :saddowns:
never played these, but I have good memories of watching a friend play Ocarina when I was 8 or something. I suddenly have an urge to somehow play all of these.
I didn't own any Nintendo consoles except the first and original handheld Gameboy, so I didn't play any of these games. I tried playing Ocarina Of Time at a friend's house once, but I bet it wasn't the same when you hadn't been playing it as a 9-year-old.
I like Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess the best. They had the most interesting stories and dungeons, IMO.
Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time had fantastic music.
I went with Link to the Past. I used to be so excited to go over to my cousins' house and play it on their SNES. I've beaten it numerous times on the SNES and the GBA, and I never get tired of playing through it. That game's probably one of the biggest reasons I got into gaming.
I picked three: Ocarina of Time Majora's Mask Wind Waker
Majora's Mask is my favorite, but every Zelda game is awesome on its own and are enjoyable.
voted link to the past, but fucking 4 swords adventures is awesome to play with friends
Ocarina of time was the shit, as was wind waker.
ONLY thing I didn't like about TP was that there were too many dungeons. Also the over world was awful in comparison to Oot.
Ahem, everyone knows that A Link to the Past is the best.
voted link to the past, but fucking 4 swords adventures is awesome to play with friends
YES, Someone agrees with me!! They need to get that game online really bad. [editline]07:57PM[/editline]
ONLY thing I didn't like about TP was that there were too many dungeons. OoT had even more, especially if you count the Ice Cave and The Well. God I miss The Well... best fucking part of my video gaming life.
