• Moving (video card) up a grade

My Pc's got an Nvidea 8400, which gives good visuals but is slightly disappointing performance wise. The framerates could be better. With RAM already having a look in, a better video card is what I really need. Nvidia 8800 springs to mind, but my knowledge is limited in this area, so I need a few pointers. With Left 4 Dead as a baseline, and perhaps GTA 4 as a target, what is the best video card I can buy taking into account fantastic performance with cost? I have a feeling that soon this may be a priority, and the internet is just too big and complicated in this area for me to scroll through myself.
9800GT http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168741 or http://www.ebuyer.com/product/161829 4870 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169208 [editline]11:29PM[/editline] Or if you're really cheap: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169828
9800GT is miles behind 4870. [editline]11:33PM[/editline] also budget and other specs
Yeah, 4870 would be the better one to get. I would suggest the 5 series but I guess you don't have £200+ to spend on a graphics card.
we don't even know what his PSU is yet, let alone bottlenecks
It's probably a Logisys 250w and a P4. lol [editline]11:39PM[/editline] In a space-saving Dell case.
it turns out to be mini-ITX and lulz are had by all.
lol
You mean "upgrading"?
No, he means Upgrayedd...
go for the 4870, but if you have a P4 you'll have a bottleneck... kinda big too.
I've browsed ebuyer a bit too, but streamlining searches has proved helpful. Thanks. I'll give the rest of the specs then: ACER Aspire M5100 AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-core Processor 2.20 GHz 2 Gb RAM 32 bit Operating System Nvidea GeForce 8400 [editline]07:35PM[/editline] Btw (and this is what confuses me) why is the 9800 twice the price, but most of you recommend the 4870? This is why I need the help! :D

From what I can find, the ACER Aspire M5100 has a 250w PSU. You'll need to get a new one if yours doesn't have 2x GPU PCIe 6-pin power connectors. Just check inside the PC, there should be a sticker on the PSU saying how powerful it is.
250W isn't powerful enough to run anything worthwhile anyway. Connectors aren't that important, there's molex->PCI-E adapters for that.
