I just noticed that on my phone the "App list" and the button to get to it on the middle bottom of my home screen turned from grey to white.
I have a Nexus 5, never installed a custom version of Android, so this is the stock 4.4.4. Out of nowhere, the app list now has a white background as opposed to a dark one when I just unlocked my phone. Google gives me no answer when trying to Google it, so I have no clue how this could have changed between it being grey, me browsing Facepunch and it now being white.

it looks like your google now launcher just got updated
Looks like the Android 5.0 launcher
Interesting. I didn't get any notifications from this though. The Google Now bar is also brighter than it was.
Speaking of the "Launcher", when does Android 5.0 become available through the regular system updates?
It depends on your phone, carrier and country. Also, the updates roll out in waves, so you might not have it while someone you know with the phone does.
So to answer your question, anyone's guess. I feel your pain though, US G3 was supposed to get Lollipop by the end of 2014...

Well the Nexus is supposed to have them first, considering it's Google's and literally default Android?
The new Google Now launcher looks exactly like that. It just updated today for me too, it's Android L (5.0) themed. The only way to revert it would be to downgrade using an older APK.
I am using Nexus 4 and I updated to 5.0 long time ago.
As for the issue, same thing happened to me on Apex launcher one day. The background turned white. Thankfully you can disable that in Apex easily
Happened to me on Paranoid Android, no notifications or anything.
I think I'm going to just have to wait for 5.0 update for my G3 and hope that sparks someone to figure out how to root it.
This happened to me also when I updated Google yesterday.
You too - I was wondering what that was. I notice it also disabled the skew effect when you pull on an end homescreen, now it just pulls a little bit. At first I thought the phone had panicked and turned off some visual effects or something.
updates to GNL are in the "Google App"

Google now launcher has had an update to support 4.2 android devices, so meaning
that you now have a lollipop-like skin/launcher
